Is this Svema film C-41 or E6?

I got 5 rolls of this from a Ukraine seller on Ebay to experiment with. It expired in 1989. The seller says its negative film but the box says reversal. Anyone familiar with this?

It is a reversal film.

But Svema never produced C-41 or E-6 films.

The process is a derivate of pre-WWII Agfa colour reversal. Your todays best bet would be room-temperature C-41. Standard C41 will give you a nice clear base, as the emulsion will wash off at these temperatures.

*edit* 5 rolls at 36 exposures each - you sure have a lot of experimenting to do!

According to what I can find, it uses (or at least seems to work in) the same process used by Orwo under the name of Orwochrome 9165.

I've processed the same stuff the "correct" way; in the Orwo 9165 process, which as far as I can see apart from a very minor change in the first developer, is exactly the same as the native Soviet process. Here's an example:



This was shot at EI16 in an Olympus 35RC. There is a duck swimming just to the right of the stern of the boat, and on the full-res image, it is very clear - the film appears to be much sharper than I expected.

As this was the first time ever that I had processed a reversal film, I didn't give nearly enough exposure in the fogging step, one potential reason for the strange colours. So I decided to process a roll as a negative in the Orwo 5168 process just to see what condition the colour dyes are in. The time in the colour developer was a total guess, but it didn't turn out too badly:



I didn't see a huge amount of fog in the base; it looks to all intents and purposes like an unmasked colour negative film. The film appears to be in very good condition given its age - I'm doing another reversal processing run shortly, and making sure I give enough fogging exposure.

Svema CO-32

Hello,
I have been experimenting processing old ORWOCHROME 16mm Cine film. I am using the process listed in the super8 database using ORWO process 9165. I also developed some Svema CO-32 16mm film as well. The ORWO UK3 16mm had some color(faint) , although the Svema had a very strange brown tint similar to Roobit's photo from pervious links. Anyone have a ideal processing time for the 1 Developer, 2nd (color) Developer & Bleach bath? It would be great to have this native process work out, although I would use C-41 as a last result.

I just sucessfully developed the cine version of this film at home using this formula. My film expired in 1991. I was amazed how good it looked.
Here is the data for CO film:

B/W developer

disodium EDTA(ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) - 2g
Na2B4O7 [borax] - 15g
Sodium sulfite (anhydrous) - 40g
Hydroquinone - 4.5g
Phenidone - 0.25g
K2CO3 [potassium carbonate] - 20g
KBr [potassium bromide] - 2g
potassum thiocyanate - 2.5g
KI [potassium iodide] - 0.01g
Water - up to 1l

pH=3D10+/-0.1

Stop bath
Sodium acetate - 15g
Acetic acid - 25ml
Water - up to 1l

pH=3D4.3+/-0.1


Color developer
disodium EDTA(ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) - 2g
Hydroxylamine sulfate - 1.2g
N,N-diethyl p-phenylene diamine sulfate -4g

Bleach bath

pH=3D6.2-6.4

Fixer
