The pipe is best reserved for off-duty moments, because it gets in the way when raising a camera to your eye, and the smoke and ash are inimical to sharpness - although that, of course, is a bourgeois concept.

Very innovative photographer though, allowed to wear whatever he liked as far as I'm concerned.

How does it work with wide-brim hats when one holds a camera like an SLR in portrait orientation? It doesn't hit the brim?

I often wear a panama hat while out photographing. No problem. A baseball cap sits lower on the head and needs to be removed.
