Tarniu,
It depends on how the fixer has been stored. Plus, you don't mention exactly which fixer you are using...
Ilford recommends the following for their Rapid Fix and Hypam:
"Unreplenished HYPAM working strength solutions
should last for up to:-
6 months in full tightly capped bottles
2 months in a tank or dish/tray with a floating lid
1 month in a half full tightly capped bottle.
7 days in an open dish/tray."
The above is from their data sheet.
Fixer can degrade with exposure to air. It usually becomes sulfur-smelling and/or precipitates out white or yellow sulfur flakes when it is going bad. If your fixer has any of these symptoms, discard it and mix new.
Also, do a clip test to check fixer activity (if you've done your homework, you've got a clip-test time in fresh fix to compare to). If the clearing time for a given film is twice that in fresh fix, discard your fix.
Also, keep in mind that fixer is relatively cheap and easily replaceable, whereas your prints and negatives are not.
"When in doubt, throw it out!" is my motto.
Best,
Doremus
