Nikon FE2, rewind button will not stay in while rewinding. I have to hold it in. Can I fix this easily by removing just the bottom plate and doing something, or will I need to send the camera in?
Thanks John! You might've just saved me from sending this back to Roberts Camera or sending it out for a $140 CLA.Rewind buttons usually have a small lever that engage a notch in the button.
If the lever's pivot is dirty it will hang up. When the cover's off you can see what's happening & move
with a small pointy thing. There's a slight chance the spring on the lever has popped out of place but it's not likely.
Remove the bottom cover & use a drop or two of 91% alcohol to the pivot & a tiny drop of clock oil*
* A bottle of clock oil will last about 17 lifetimes. Use lighter fluid(a drop) & it'll work for years.
Update: I did some soul-searching and decided to just send it back to Roberts. I didn't want to let it go, as I just got it. I didn't want to risk them just refunding my money. Thinking about it though, it's silly to consider paying again to get this camera right. If I had known it needed CLA, I would have paid less than half what I paid for this one.
Roberts Camera has technicians on staff there, who will look at it and decide whether to repair, replace or refund. I'm hoping they will opt to repair, as I like the camera and if I bought another online, I would take a similar risk. Also, isn't this why I have multiple Nikon bodies? So I have a back-up? I will make do nicely with my N90s, N80 and FG while this one is out.
Thanks for the advice, fellas. I'll update this thread again when I hear back from them (probably this week) as to what they'll do. Then again when I get it back. I like to support proper camera stores, and Roberts has got to be one of the few left in the US that has technicians on staff. (along with KEH?)
Thanks for the good reference, M. I hope they don't let me down.My wife's FTQL was stolen; Roberts went through three bodies and returns for me to find one with decent shutter speeds. Good guys over there.
