Is there a way to loosen up a stiff built-in lens hood?

I have a couple of lenses with built-in hoods that are a little bit stiff to pull out. They do pull out, but they just need a bit of twisting around to get them to extend. Does anyone have any ideas on how they can be loosened up so that they just slide out nicely with a gentle pull.
