I have a polaroid 500 film holder, one of the grey metal ones.
I read on the polaroid site that you should not use this holder.
is there any reason why?

i have been using a 500 film holder instead of a 545 for 2 maybe 3 years.
you have to be careful how far u pull the paper off of the film --- unlike the 545 there is no stop --- otherwise it is simple, metal, thinner than the 545, spreads the chem-pod better - not to mention it costs almost nothing because people think it is useless lol
I used to have one too, and it worked OK. There was some way you had to be more careful with it, and I seem to recall it's what John said. I only got rid of it because I was given a more modern one. Even in those days (?15 years ago) you were advised not to use them.
Advice:
Sacrifice one sheet of the Polaroid to learning how far you have to pull the envelope off the film sheet. There's a mark showing the center point of the envelope, and IIRC that's about how far you pull the envelope off - but check it for yourself.
Thanks! i will continue using it then. I had one of the later models but I droped it from a short height and it broke to many peices.
BTW you dont have to sacrifice a sheet to find out how far to pull it out.. just take the holder out and hold a paket of film over it. keep the end of the film just before the film opening. Then look at the back of the film packet and make a mental note how far to pull it out while expoing the film.
