DPReview.com to close

After nearly 25 years of operation, DPReview will be closing in the near future. This difficult decision is part of the annual operating plan review that our parent company shared earlier this year.

Had no idea DP Review was part of Amazon. But have not really looked at that site for years now.

The parent company is Amazon. Surely you’ve heard about the layoffs of tens of thousands of employees there. This is just collateral damage from Amazon’s post-pandemic drop in sales. Can you explain why you think this action is related to the future of digital photography, and why you think it’s a “craze”?

I'm not sure which is more tragic, the loss of DPReview or the rediculous thread title (although I understand the possibility of attempted irony related to another recent thread).

This probably means that the advertising revenue is decreasing.
Which may very well be just one more indication of how much the (non-phone) digital camera "craze" is dying.

The probable drop in advertising revenue could be an indication of the state of the digital camera market now. The field is pretty saturated, cameras have reached maturity--there are not many incentives to upgrade or buy new equipment, Meanwhile phones have taken over much of the market with increased resolution and features.

This thread may be in jest, but it will probably go on for a long time

I remember the time when so many people, including complete novices, were excited about digital photography. There was a lot of demand for digital cameras, including P&S. As the technology matured, the market saturated, the demand and the pace of innovation slowed, the smartphone became the de facto standard camera for most people. It certainly is for me. My mid-tier phone has a camera that astounds me. The only thing missing is different focal lengths, but I can live without that.

Digital will still be used by the pros. It is far from dead. Photojournalists, product, sports, wedding, catalog and many others will continue to use digital photography to meet client demands and deadlines. AI will probably kill stock, lifestyle and photo-illustration.
