I just ordered some of Formulary's ArtFix looking for a Sodium Thiosulfate alkaline fixer which is the way Kodak F-24 has been described to me. No acid, just fixer made with "hypo" and sodium sulfite. I admit that for years, I thought Sodium Thiosulfate was the acid in acid fixer. I was wrong. What do you know about these fixers? Thank You.

Something very similar to Kodak's F-24 is easy to mix yourself and much cheaper than buying any pre-packaged product. If interested, I'll list the formula I use here.

Yes, I am interested. Just be sure to state whether the Sodium Thiosulfate is granular (rice) or anhydrous (powder). I understand it makes a difference when mixing........Regards!

This is the formula I've been using for nearly 40 years:

Fix for paper

Water (100-125 deg F) 750ml
Sodium Thiosulfate, penta* 240g
Sodium Sulfite 10g
Sodium Bisulfite 25g
Water to make 1 Liter

*Sodium Thiosulfate, anhydrous 152g (water 80-85 deg F; never over 90 deg F)

To make larger quantities, simply multiply everything by whatever final volume size you need.

Mix in the order shown and use undiluted. Fix paper for 4 minutes. If you plan to selenium tone, then wash prints in running water for 5-10 minutes before second Plain Hypo fix.

Plain Hypo

Water (100-125 deg F) 750ml
Sodium Thiosulfate, penta* 240g
Sodium Sulfite 30g
Water to make 1 Liter

*Sodium Thiosulfate, anhydrous 152g (same water temp precaution as above)

Use undiluted for 4 minutes.

Hope this helps.

Note the first formula posted by Alan above is Kodak F-24. The second formula is not actually "plain hypo" but an unbuffered alkaline fixer. "Plain hypo" is simply sodium thiosulfate in water.

Technically, that is correct. Whatever one would like to label it, it's the bath I use just prior to tossing prints into a selenium toning bath.
