Quick question from an APUG newbie - is it taboo to mention NeatImage on here? I use it a lot. Maybe I should be burnt at the stake as a heretic, fired by my mahogany cameras. I only saw two short threads when searching with it as a keyword.

Yeah, some people here freak out at the mention of any use of software, even if its used on scans of film. The DPUG site is supposed to be for digital and hybrid processes but no one uses it.

No freak-out here, but photographic software discussions are strictly and intentionally off topic.
And DPUG.ORG is definitely a victim of a classic Catch 22 - not enough people go there because it isn't active enough.
There is some activity though, and if you join and start a thread, it wouldn't create a problem to refer people there from this thread.

OK, thanks for clearing that up  The end result, in some ways, is that the methods of moving a film image onto APUG where we discuss/learn/enjoy it are like going to the bathroom. It's necessary, but what goes on in the bathroom is never actually mentioned...

Is DPUG still around? I use the link here on ARPUG; no response. I try going through my browser; again, no response.

Is it still accessible, or has it been taken down?

Thanks,

The link at the top of this page worked for me. http://www.dpug.org/forums/home.php
That link doesn't work for me. I just get a blank page.

I have no interest in DPUG though. I'd rather discuss a small amount of hybrid processes here where the main subject is film, but there's a lot of pushback against any talk of any process that doesn't involve liquids.

Which is fair enough, the rules are clear when you join, but there aren't too many places to discuss the digital aspects of photography from a film perspective.

OK, I'll bite. Just what is NeatImage and should I care if I shoot film?......Regards!

It is digital noise reduction software. Works well for digital camera images, but in my experience it destroys film scans. Some people use it to reduce grain in film scans; its really just blurs the grain, destroying detail. It works better for digital camera images because film grain in scans is typically much coarser than the noise a good digital camera produces. The software just isn't able to remove that grain and keep the image detail.

My view is that film has grain; that's a normal characteristic of the medium. Just something you accept if you choose to shoot film.
