scans well for me ... how are you doing it?

if you let the scanner do it as negative, well ... you're on your own ... you using a drum scanner? What is your iris size?

If you're getting grainy shots, you're severely underexposing. Try exposing at iso 200-250, for the shadows. 400H is perfectly capable of a clean, grain free 8x10 when handled correctly.

I have scanned a lot of this film recently for clients.
Try opening your aperture over 10um (microns). I usually set my Howtek 7500 to 10um or 15um depending on the size.
Any smaller and the grain becomes unmanageable. Kami also helps.
