I am seriously considering returning to full-time study next year and am aiming to do a photography course. RMIT is offering courses at TAFE level (Cert IV/Diploma) as well as Photography as a BA or BFA and I'm wondering whether anyone has experience with any of these courses and would care to comment on them.

The BFA looks to be closest to what I want to study, but I expect that places in both it and the BA may be limited. The Cert IV/Diploma would possibly be another method of entry into the BA stream, albeit a longer and more round about method. I couldn't find any other Uni (or TAFE) courses that were photography oriented and PSC looks to be fully digital nowadays which is a bit limiting to my aspirations.

Hi Paul,
20 years ago I started the BFA at RMIT and completed the first year before having to pull out. I got in as a mature age student and was the only student in the class who hadn't done any B&W work. I did have the advantage of having used a LF camera before, which stood me in good stead.

The teachers I had were uniformly excellent. They managed to teach me, who failed year 10 maths, physics and chemistry, so that I could understand and even pass those subjects. I know the course has changed considerably with the advent of digital, but a lot of what I was taught is still being taught, and I think they are still using LF cameras for the studio classes.

I would thoroughly recommend doing this course as I know that it will really help. I know that I learnt heaps from it. It isn't cheap, but there is a saying about it. Those who complete the RMIT course, get jobs.

Go for it!!!

Mike

Thanks guys, I'll get in contact with the appropriate faculties and see what they recommend.
