IR filter for IR vir-gin

So, I've decided I like the look of IR more than I like the look of 10 dollar bills in my wallet...maybe...

But when I looked for suggested IR filters online, they were all rather expensive. Am I going to be able to take nice IR without sacrificing more than a hundred and twenty-five dollars for an IR filter? Are there any lower priced brands that make opaque IR filters?

Try some developed but unexposed Ektachrome film.... or would it be easier to read as unexposed Ektachrome film that as been developed 'normally'.

Depending on the film, you can often get good results with a #25 filter. What lens size do you need? I have a Hoya RM72 filter in 67mm size, and it was quite a bit less than $125.

If you want to use Ilford's SFX film, they sell a cheaper filter for it. It is a thin gel filter (similar to the filter material used for theatre lights) held in a plastic frame which fits a Cokin holder.

The optically quality will not be as good as an expensive glass filter but this close to the lens, any imperfections would be so far out of focus that they would probably not be discernable.

It's a cheap way of trying out IR to see if you like it before spending big money on a 'proper' filter.

Lee makes a gel filter and holder system that's fairly in expensive, with at least one IR filter in the line up. I think calumet sells the branded under their own name, iirc the filters are $10-$20 and holder was pretty cheap.

Googling "r72 filter" (it's Hoya's IR filter code) turns up a couple of prices in the $30-50 range. The exact price depends on the size you need, of course; it looks like there might be cases where a larger filter and an adapter ring would actually be cheaper than a smaller filter by itself. What are you mounting it on?

My Googling R72 filter turned up many references, one of which is an EBay seller named 47 Street Photo which I thought went out of business several years ago.

But my point is they sell "Opteka" filters and I've never heard of them.

Is anybody familiar with this brand?
