I was just wondering how many do IR photography with a digital camera.

A while back there was a whole web site devoted to the subject and I started down that road with the cancellation of EK IR products.

Any IR photographers?

Dear Ron,

I have been doing quite a bit of work during the past several years with digital cameras converted to IR. I am so far only processing my images to B&W. You can see some of this work at my website, Welcome - Sandy King Photography, both in the Experimental Light and Carbon Transfer forums. Right now I am working with a Sony a7r converted to IR.

Best,

Sandy

Sandy, those photos are great. Having seen some of your photos in person, I can say you have a great talent and a great portfolio. Best wishes.

As for the IR, I have been using an unmodified camera with crossed polarizers. I can derive false color or B&W. The photos are 20M files that I have to reduce before posting here though.

Ron,

Thanks for your kind comments, and I would love to see some of your work when you can post it. Not sure I have ever seen anything like you describe it the split polarizers.

Most modern digital cameras have very strong IR blocking filters, built into the AA filter, and to be useful for IR photography the filter has to be replaced with one that does not block IR light. Once replaced, the sensor itself is very sensitive to IR. There are several good companies that make the conversion to IR, and several choices are available, from 595 nm up to 810 nm. The small mirrorless cameras with micro four-thirds or APS-C sensors are good candidates for the conversion.

Iwould like to but don't want to convert my D800.Iwould if I find a reasonable cut-off filter but dislike permanent conversions

Like Ralph, I do not want a permanent conversion and so I used the crossed polarizers. It does cost a lot of speed, and so the shots are taken at about ISO 1 - 10 depending on the camera settings and light. But it does work.

I have been rather busy, but will post a series showing what can be done.
