I've been wanting to try cross processing C41 film in E6 chemistry for a while now, and I finally did it... Apart from the fact that there's an orange base and you seem to lose 2/3 to 1 stop of light processing it as color slide (may be a visual effect of the dark base?) Kodak Portra seems to hold up remarkably well with regards to color rendition for a cross processed film...
Which got me thinking... What if Kodak offered Portra 400 on a clear base, specifically for this purpose? I photographed a grey card and made a custom curves adjustment from that photo in an effort to simulate what the colors would look like if the orange base were not present. The following images have not been manipulated in any way other than the color correction, I haven't even sharpened them or spotted them for dust...
Yes, I realize there may be some innate flaws with what I've done, but it does get you thinking... I do like the color palate, and it still has pretty decent latitude. Also, How many lower contrast slide films are out there now?
Again, these could all benefit with some more exposure and maybe contrast, but the goal here was to do as little adjustments as possible. I don't know about you, but Portra 400 on a clear base seems like it would look pretty nice.
