Today I happened to open a newish roll of FP4+ in 120 size (expiry June 2023). Out of idle curiosity I held the silver exterior bag up to the window - and I could see through it! I could easily make out the details of the window curtain. And I could see strong light even through two layers.
After this discovery I fished a yellow plastic wrapping from a recent roll of TMY120 out of the trash. It was opaque under the same conditions.
From now on 120 FP4+ goes into a black container once it's removed from its little cardboard box.
LOL... now what, exactly, inspired that investigation? I’ll have to try it with the FP-4 and Tri-X that I intended to use last month but never found the time. I wouldn’t worry as the backing paper provides adequate protection to the film. Very interesting observation!
The sun was in my eyes while I was sitting at my desk opening the package and the idea just popped into my head.
It’s certainly not something I’ll obsess about, and I know the backing paper alone is fully effective, but since I use black plastic containers anyway so the films don’t get crushed in my backpack after exposure I’ll just use them before as well.
