From what I've seen, Carl Weese is an excellent platinum printer. His methodology does put alot of emphasis on getting a consistent negative - he does not use contrast control agents/methods. This is beyond my current skill level, so I rely on contrast control methods.

Doug, (not that it's the only method but) definitely take a look to Phil Davis' (R.I.P.) BTZS (Beyond the Zone System) method for being able to do perfectly consistent negatives. (Of course, that's in case you haven't already done so and you shoot LF - allowing to process negatives individually...)

Thanks for the post. I am not using platinum printing but am interested in it and have done some homework. BTZS is on my list of "I want" and actually am slating money for it. I will have to get some other things together as well before I can even attempt platinum printing, but I always appreicate finding out more about it.

Another good source about platinum/palladium printing is Dick Arentz's book - Platinum and Palladium Printing, 2nd Edition. When Phil Davis & I did the BTZS workshops up in Flagstaff at Northern Arizona University, Dick Arentz used to invite Phil and I and our students to a barbecue and we got to see many incredible platinum/palladium prints. In fact his dedication in the front of his book was to Phil Davis.

I second the emotion about the Dick Arentz book...it is the bible and if you want to learn to be a better Platinum printer buy It. On the other hand it does not take any great skill to make a negative for the process...of course shadows need to be bumped up on the scale but a good film like TMY or FP4 will easily print after being developed in a brew like Pyrocat MC at 2:2:100
I've also made excellent negatives in Xtol 1:1 with Trix...I'm not all that technically inclined so I keep it simple;no dis on the BTZS system
