Hi, my name is Katherine Gillis and I have over 20 years experience as a traditional retoucher, spotting and retouching color and B&W prints and negatives. I'm currently creating an online course on retouching and spotting B&W prints. It will be comprehensive with video demonstrations of my techniques. This is an art form requiring specific and skilled techniques which may soon be lost.

Information about me can be found at www.katherinegillis.com.

I am soliciting input from people just like you to ensure that what I include will be valuable to you. I am in the outlining stage of what I am including. Your suggestions of what you would find most beneficial to your needs will need to be shared before the end of February (2016).

I continue to do retouching and spotting for analog photographers who elect not to do it themselves. Hope you'll respond with any suggestions of what you feel should especially be included within this course. I can be emailed at katgillis@me.com.

I think its a great idea. I can't afford a class but I hope its a success so other people can learn and pass on the skills.

katherine this is great but traditional spotting of prints (B+W) is NOT that hard. the real trick is not to go in there and try to spot the entire spot right off..a little dab will do ya!
anyway I'm sure you have oodles of info to share. (also studied with Veronica Cass)

Input from other sources suggest that most are looking for me to narrow the topic down to Applying Dyes. There are still 4 more days before I make the decision to narrow the focus. Your input is appreciated and I look forward until the 29th when I will make my decision based on my research.

I would like to learn more on how to retouch/lighten dark spots on B+W prints. As other people here said, touching up the light (dust) spots is not all that hard. But bleaching a dark spot without creating a white blob around it is much trickier.

As others have said, I can 'do' B+W light spots (on the print). I know the theory of bleaching dark spots, but as others have said, it's a lot harder and I'm hopeless at it, so some specific input here would be good.
I've also got a set of colour retouching dyes, but I've not been brave enough to have a go at this! Although there is an old Kodak info sheet giving some advice, there's nothing like seeing it done before you have a go yourself... so, I'd be interested in learning how to spot colour... there's nothing worse than a smooth blue sky with a couple of small spots (and in the day, I can't even claim it's a star!)

I bring my work to a spotter, Rose Scheler, and I think what she does is magic. I'm not sure I'll ever have the knack for it, but I would be very interested in watching other people's techniques. Thank you!

I don't bleach. I retouch the negative. I'd be happy to look into that for you. For now go to my website at www.katherinegillis.com and Subscribe so I can notify you when the course will be available. Also you'll be advised when I will post a course description and give you the opportunity of a pre-sell discount. Thanks for contacting me. Katherine

Hey Jim, Very funny. I retouch negatives instead of bleaching prints. I've also had others ask the same thing and I will be looking into it. The techniques and tools I use can be used for both color and black & white, however, my first course due to demand is about retouching black & white prints. Another here who wants to learn about retouching b&w sheet film negatives 4x5/5x7/8x10 that create black spots or larger areas on prints. My fixed income (retired) would not permit travel between Seattle and S.Carolina, but hopefully you'll be able to provide instruction otherwise. I was disappointed when Kodak's Crocein Scarlet disappeared from the marketplace, as that's what I would have started with. I'm off to subscribe right away.
Let's start with I am for hire to retouch negatives. I have 3 Adams Retouching machines, one with a microscope. I've been successful using Gouache. The course I'm compiling right now is traditional spotting and retouching on a B&W print. Please Subscribe on my website at www.katherinegillis.com to stay abreast of courses I may offer in the future or if you are interested in taking this one. I promise it won't cost you a week in a hotel, a plane ticket and food  Katherine
