You could try this (for 1000ml):
As said earlier, instead of adding dry phenidone powder, I use a 1% solution in glycol.

pH should be 8.20. If it's too low, add drops of a 10% NaOH solution until you hit the mark. If it's too high, add drops of acetic acid (I use cleaning vinegar, which is around 8%) until desired pH is reached.

I never mix a liter all at once but instead mix the amount I need, which is usually 150ml.

Ok, I'll try. thanks a lot

What would be the big differences with another PC developer using sodium metaborate instead of borax and sodium carbonate as in your recipe?
I don't need to have something that is mimicking xtol completely, but it would be nice to have something that can be diluted as 1+1 or 1+3 with results the same or better then D76 - and as consistent in its use....

Is that realistic?

I suppose the biggest issue with this recipe would be it doesn't keep long?

Ok, sorry, I was not thinking.
Obviously sodium carbonate and borax together result in sodium metaborate

Hi your version is working properly.
Is this your main developer @koraks?

I definitely need to calibrate my pH meter. ;-)

Yes, this is my main developer currently and has been for the past year or so. I quite like it and times for XTOL seem to work well with it. Note that I nearly always use it undiluted, but I don't see why dilutions of e.g. 1+1 wouldn't work as well.

With the current issues surrounding Kodak XTOL I'm interesting in exploring self mixed ascorbic acid film and paper developers. Are you using an off-the-shelf source of ascorbic acid, e.g. https://tinyurl.com/yy5p2faa or something supplied by a photographic / lab source?

I use the stuff I got from a drugstore just across the street. It's generic food grade vit C in powder form. I bet the kind you linked to would work just as well.
