I was making up a new batch of FAC solution for cyanotypes and I noticed there are some insoluble particles at the bottom. Is it normal or is there is some problem with my powder - it's the Jacquarde stuff, probably a good 3-4 years old. Don't see anything untoward in the bottle, nice powdery with no lumps or anything. Probably it has been like this all along but I was not paying attention before. For now I will just decant the clear solution from the top - should be OK.

Just curious....

Ferric Ammonium Citrate is a rather messy compound. It isn't unusual to find it mixed with a bit of Ferric Citrate, which is green and insoluble.

Just put it through a coffee filter or some cotton wool stuffed into the neck of a funnel.

Aha...thanks Nicholas. The crud does look green(er) than the rest. The decanted solution is warmer color than what's left over, almost reddish yellow. (Does that mean that the clear solution is more like the brown variety and not the so-called green one? Oh, no one more thing to worry about.)

I Just skimmed from the top after letting it settle overnight with a dropper so I can investigate. Next time I'll try filtering so I don't need to throw away so much.

Something new I learned...
