I use a ATN 1X gen 1 monocular for seeing what I am doing when handling film. My regular illuminators are two 840nm led arrays pointed at the ceiling and they are quite bright and easy to see fine detail with. I want to experiment with some extended red sensitivity film that tops out at around 720nm. So, just to be safe I got a pair of 940nm led arrays, and man are they dim. Still workable but just. FYI, regular gen1 night vision seems to be centered on 840nm illumination, so I think I'll be using that for everyday film.

Why not using an incandescent lamp with a IR-filter on it with cut-off just above the max spectral sensitivity of your extended-red films?

Because the LEDs are cheaper (much) an I don't need a darkroom heater in August.

I'm not speaking of 500W ...
