I have a Linhof Schneider - Kreuznach Technika Symmar 5.6/210 - 12/370 lens. It's in a Linhof shutter.

I got it as part of a kit and I am trying to find some info about it as well as it's value.

I can't seem to find anything about it other than it will cover 4x5 and 5x7.

Any info is appreciated.

thanks.

Best to look at completed transactions on the auction site, but I'd guess it would be in the range of 300 - 500 USD. Likely on the lower end of that range.

The last one went for less than $150 - but with a defective shutter (cable release socket missing). Since yours is "Linhof Select" and in a working shutter, add another $150?

Around $300 would be a fair price, I think.

There always seems to be a bit of a glut on 210mm lenses at the auction site. Since there are so many choices being considered by beginning photographers the multi coated lenses get the nod in the 300 - 325 range, and sometimes less. Your Linhof Schneider would finish around $225 if it's nice and clean.

Jim's right prices in the US & Canada are quite low for 210mm lenses and far more modern Multicoated Symmars and Sironars (the Rodenstocks equivalent) are currently selling for around $250 - $300, sometimes a little more.

As a lens it's probably worth more to someone building up a Linhof outfit, you didn't say what the rest of the kit you bought was

Your lens covers 5"x7" and also the less common now British (whole plate) 6½"x8½"

Ian

PS: Should add !!!!

Your lens is probably only worth about $120 - $150 as it needs a CLA, to fix the sticking slow shutter speeds

The lens

There is a superb Sironar for sale on APUG & the Large Format forum for $275.00

The "Linhof" part may add a little to the value but shouldn't. The main benefit of "Linhof Select" lenses is that they were matched to the camera with which they were originally sold. Linhof did a few other things, if you're interested let me know and I'll provide a list, but the main one was matching to a particular camera. Obviously the camera matching is no longer relevant and this many years after manufacture any benefits from the other things Linhof did (such as selecting lenses with closer tolerances in some areas) are no longer important given the age of the lens. I'd be surprised if a 210 Symmar, with or without the Linhof part, sold for more than about $200 but I haven't checked ebay's completed sales, maybe they do.

Hi David !
The Symmar convertibles of that era have not so good reputation in Europe.
I own this lens (bought for the shutter) and it is not very good. (I compare with a Symmar-S).
So you'd better hold it in your kit because you won't get much money from it.

david -

i don't think you will have much trouble selling your lens.
as cambell suggested, make sure you say "linhof" in your advert ..
linhof badged the "cream of the crop" of the schneider lenses ...

i have one and unlike georgesgiralt i use it all the time, and really like it.
on a 4x5 as a 210, and as a converted 370 on a 5x7 camera.
the 370 gives enough slight abberation to make it a nice portrait lens
(as schneider's website suggests). the only problem mine has is a
case of scheideritis, but it doesn't harm the way it works ...

if i didn't already have one, i would have emailed/pm'd you already

good luck!

john
