These photos were made while mankind was still coming down from the trees.

I have a similar set of photos, but it shows men in cars.

And then it became illegal to take pictures of women in trees because it was viewed as discriminatory against women who either couldn't climb trees or simply didn't have trees to climb

I think these pics are a symbol of rebellion. Women back then were supposed to be delicate and weak. But women are actually more robust of the species

This gave me a good chuckle.

The thing about "found photography" or "vernacular photography" or whatever you want to call it is that there were so many pictures taken that you could come up with just about any theme and still find enough pictures to fill a book. It has been estimated that there were 57 Billion photos taken by 1990, so even if only 1 photo in a million was of a woman up a tree that is still over 50,000 photos out there to find. Pick your own weird topic and you could be half way to a book deal or a PhD.

This is an entirely different photographic phenomenon known as "women posing in really uncomfortable looking ways that men find attractive".
I know...and I have not taken my previous type of nudes in the redwoods for decades...and there was not many to begin with. I wanted to make images of the landscape with nudes, rather than the other way around...using the nude female form for scale and to express how comfortable and natural is was to be in the redwoods (historically, the figure in the redwoods were usually clothed men with axes and cross-cut saws -- a look and feel I wanted the opposite of).

I am glad I did the few images I did. The images were a learning experience I was able to bring to my series of my triplet boys in the redwoods as they grew up.

I personally have reservations about men taking photographs of busty skinny women -- the male gaze, and all that (women as objects). Rarely do the photographs go beyond that...but occasionally they do.

I think it was simply an expression of free-spirited, spontaneous playfulness, with a humorous hint at "conquering nature" while on a hike. I've certainly seen old photographs of men in trees also. Perhaps there are more photographs of women in trees because back then, it was often the male companion in charge of the camera... but that's just a guess.

Why people today are less inclined to opt for playful portraits of people in trees may have to do with a somewhat changed cultural attitude about what casual portrait photography should look like.

A member of a previous photo club I belonged to, together with a 'female nudes' type group, some how got a mature female model to climb up a tree naked to have her picture taken - it's true, I've seen the picture! The funny bit is, it was taken in a public area, at the back of a museum I think and I can only imagine the look and comments that any of the general public might have made if they inadvertently came across the scene. I do wonder how many others who heard the story 'popped by' at a later date in the hope of seeing another 'tree lady'. The thought of the whole thing, whilst writing this, still makes me chuckle.
