inclement weather camera use

I shall be going on a country walk with my Field camera for the first time in the next week or two. I have a reasonably water resistant rucksack to carry it and accessories in.

I wonder if anyone can give some tips as to using the camera in inclement weather. This basically means rain and wind and possibly even sun!

There are plastic bags [sleeves?] that have openings for the hands, objective lens and eyepiece that are available for various cameras.

I was just thinking of making an all weather camera that can get wet wet wet. Even if you cover it the wind will get you despite the effort. Work in a box of some sort with a window in front?

A small rain poncho with snap closures at the neck will fit over the lens, and cover both the camera and the focusing cloth. Mine fits nicely, and even overhangs the lens to protect it from rain. I bring a small tarp to throw on wet, mucky ground to lay my pack on while working...make sure to get one big enough that it wraps over the pack to protect it from rain too. Also bring lens tissue for those raindrops that get blown in anyways. Last tip; if it's windy, never turn your back on your camera!

I use a black garbage bag, as long as its not downpouring. I make a small hole for the lens, and then just screw the whole thing into the tripod. If the bag is big enough, I can even use it as a darkcloth. Its not glamorous, and I usually get a few drops, but I doubt you can avoid that except by staying in the house.
