I've never had this problem before, but maybe you have?
I have a new to me d300 and brand new flash drive in it,
took a bunch of exposures, and dragged/dropped them from a flash drive onto the thumbdrive and i am using
( plugged into the back of the computer ) ... I loaded PS CC2019 and everything was fine until it wasn't.
All of a sudden working on photo 12 or 13 and PS does the FREEZE and CRASH --- I've had to go back to a pre-crash clone back up ( which i am on as I type this ) but I haven't loaded PS again or tried to re-work on the stack of photos I worked on,

As mentioned, I'm working on the images on (a usb ) thumbdrive (images not on imac hard drive until I finish and save them ) .
Could this be my problem? Images ( IDK 33MB not huge )not on computer except through the olde maybe wonky? usb port and Big Box Store thumbdrive?

Thanks for your sage advice !
John

Yeah, I would say you need to get them on a local drive, if only to work on them, THEN move them to an offline storage media.

If you must use attached media, you need it to be at least USB 3, Thunderbolt or ESata (buss attached) with enough overhead for caching.

Also, check your system's virtual memory and main drive cache space; if that runs low, the computer gets really cranky...

thanks kino !
i think that my using a 11 year old usb port might have been overloaded
and made the computer kind of upset. i ended up restoring from an earlier back up after
doing first aid, and then yesterday re-installed a clean copy of high sierra... with the help from
then snuck in again with the bootable back up, and did first aid again to make sure i used triple antibacterial ointment
and i didn't still have a problem ... weirdly when i went into "recovery mode" it wouldn't let me run first aid on the system
claiming there was something that wouldn't dismount, even when i dismounted it ( why i snuck in through the back up )
computers are great when they work but when they get cranky they are not much fun..

I copy the images from the camera’s flash card onto the computer’s hard drive, then work on them from there.
Apple made some driver changes in the recent incarnations of MacOS which may have influenced your problem. I have occasional problems with the computer spontaneously dismounting USB drives, which is part of the reason I don’t work directly on a USB memory device.

You might try reformatting the thumb drive with disk utility.

I work with external flash drives all the time and they are fine for storage and real-time playback of compressed media but their read/write speed is too slow for most editing purposes.

thanks for your insights !
what happened was i installed security patch or something like that for my old mac's sierra
and adobe just didn't like it so it crashed and unfortunately took the computer down with it.
totally bummed cause even though its a senior citizen it has worked great, and
i've had no complaints. might take a second or 2 to do whatever its doing but i take longer ..
anyhow i ran 1st aid on everything every time it crashed and as soon as i loaded PS .. i got rid of PS
loaded a fresh clean old version to go with the fresh old OS and fresh backup i reinstalled and as soon as the robot
told me to install the security patches and it did it again..
it's too bad i didn't watch the infomercials sooner, they might have fixed it without the first aid when i used meaningful beauty on it to smooth out the edges
and now im waiting for the botox injections, cause "its worth it" ...

I'm running a Dell Precision 3800 with Windows 10 Pro. As updates progress older hardware no longer works as well as is once did or does not work at all.
My workflow: I remove the flash drive from my D300 and attach a card reader to the stupid high speed switch machine's USB port then insert the card into the card reader. I create a folder that I want to copy the NEF files to then select all the files on the card and copy them to the newly created folder. When the copy is finished and the files verified to be in the selected destination I remove the card and reader. Next I open Capture NX-D and convert the NEF files to 16 bit Tiff and save in a separate folder. Now I view the images with windows viewer then select the ones I want to use/edit further then edit in PhotoShop CS5.1.
The equivalent work flow for Mac should be easy to do and be stable also.
