Elsewhere on a thread, I mentioned that I have shot over 1500 sheets of 4x5 Portra for my various portrait projects, and @Alan Edward Klein replied:

"Sounds like a good investment. Good luck on your project. Tell us more about it?"

So here's my introduction, even though I have been a Photrio member for a while now.

The Worldbuilders of Science Fiction and Fantasy​

The boundlessly creative and talented authors, artists, storytellers, conrunners, etc. etc. who bring forth myriad possible worlds of speculative fiction to spark the public imagination. This photo project is to take portraits of these people, perhaps posed with their most famous or loved work.

I have been working and exhibiting large prints of this project for a number of years, and I am very honored to be a Hugo Award Finalist in the Best Fan Artist category this year (the actual voting has commenced and the result will be announced in the 2013 Worldcon, held in Chengdu, China this year). The Hugo award is the most prestigious award in the Science Fiction and Fantasy field.

Cosplay Transformations / For the Love of the Art​

A project of cosplayers and costumers both in and out of their costumes.

The title refers to how cosplayers transform themselves from their “mundane” daily appearance and temporarily become the characters they portray.

I am in awe and heartily sport and congratulate anyone who can undertake a project of such scale.

I hope I do not come across as a naysayer or killer of dreams because I am however disappointed with the results. I understand the difficulty of getting people into the studio and getting them to give the photographer the time and willingness to pose, but it can and has been done well before--albeit on a somewhat smaller scale. Take Penn's "Small Trades" for example. I know it's unfair to compare anyone to Penn, but couldn't there be a bit more artistry to the images? The high angle, fo example is not flattering nor engaging.

Congrats. I’m familiar with the Hugo and its namesake, Hugo Gernsback, through my vintage radio hobby. I have a piece of equipment he sold through his Electro Importing Company catalog that dates back to the early 1900s.

Move from Oxford (IA) to Heber Springs and you find Mike Disfarmer doing much the same thing as a local portraitist for his community. Disfarmer avoids the lighting and framing issues you raise. His series is both more unintentionally monumental in its scope and years, and less — it lacks the Michael Apted 7 Up time element.
