Is this the developer that is supposed to be replacing Ilfosol S, due to short shelf-life? Is it supposed to have the same characteristics? The reason I ask is because I am currently using Ilfosol S for my FP4+ in 35mm and MF, and I want to get some BTZS testing done on some 5x7 film before I start shooting LF and wasting too much film. I'm sticking with FP4+ for the time being, as I'm somewhat familiar with it, but I don't want to spend the money on film testing with Ilfosol S if it is going to be replaced soon. Is there another developer somebody could suggest for this film in 5x7 (I will be contact printing only, with a diffuser head for the time being)? I want to continue with the Ilford line of products, and I don't shoot alot, so I would also prefer to stick with a liquid concentrate, rather than going to a powder.

Thanks,
Tim

You`re spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing film developers sold as liquid concentrates as there are so many brands and types available. I don`t know when Ilfosol-3 will be available although the Paterson range of chemicals will be relaunched late February/early March. Acutol is a particular favourite for FP4 Plus.

Tim,
Here is a link to the latest info on release of Ilfosol3

(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

From what I have seen on this board, the new product is supposed to have a greater shelf life, but that's all Simon or anyone else has said about it.

Off the topic (kind of)
Does anybody know if the shelf life of Ilfosol-s and like developers will be lenghtened by refridgeration (not freezing) after openning?

FWIW I have found that most devs last longer than most say by the simple expedient of making sure the cap is on tight. I find Ilfosol S lasts several months in half full bottles and despite darkening works fine. Same for Xtol out of the 5L or 3.8 L packs. I am not sure I will used Ilfosol S much more as I seem to have terrible probs with frothing & airbells which have never been a prob before. No hint of this with Xtol.
