Sheet film seams not to be raising too much. Thought I needed to order another 100 pack of hp5+, I might just hold off. Film prices keep going up, but will continue to buy.

I was watching some Ilford 4x5 film at Freestyle. It jumped from $158 yesterday to about $180 today!

The truth is out there somewhere as they used to say on the Y Files but getting to it might take a period longer than the nine seasons of the series

As I understand the increase is one between IlfordPhoto and the retailers and will not necessarily translate into the same percentages for the consumer.

However I cannot see how the biggest recession we may see in our lifetimes over maybe the next year if not longer will not adversely affect photographic retailers. So interesting to see how the IlfordPhoto increases will play out

I am far from convinced that general consumer reaction will be that of those who state that they are still glad that film and all the adjacent materials associated with analogue can keep going and effectively will pay "whatever it takes" to make this happen The price increase die may have been cast for IlfordPhoto before the current crisis really struck and thus there is/was nothing that IlfordPhoto can do but implement the price increase. However I cannot help but feel that it cannot be ideal timing

I could be wrong, but I think that that article may be US based, so may actually reflect the US distributor's (Roberts Cameras) information.
Harman do their own distribution in the UK - and may therefore benefit from higher margins.
The US is their biggest market, so more product is sold through Roberts than through other conduits.

The last time I bought 8x10 sheets of HP5+ it was $109 a box. At $150 a box, I doubt I will buy it again. Such a shame.

If this price increase is supposed to take effect May 11, why have prices jumped already, or have we not actually had the price increase yet??

A price increase is never welcome from a consumer's point of view and especially coming at a time of what appears to be a global recession. ( I imagine the price increase was formulated before the Covid 19 pandemic).

But we will talk and give out about it, just like we did about the Fuji price increase in April 2019. And then it's forgotten about.
I think Ilford products are of such good quality that the price increase will have little effect.

If the whole market is so price sensitive then surely Fomapan would be the world leader.

That’s been my opinion for awhile now too. But even for me, there’s a limit. (I won’t even consider Kodak products in 8x10 format - they’re simply too expensive) At $6 per sheet of 8x10 HP5, I’ll be careful how I use up my remaining inventory and then switch to something less costly. The CatLabs X80 has proven to be a very good film, though with a speed compromise. At approximately $4 a sheet, it’s starting to look mighty appealing.

I do have one other alternative that’s less expensive still: for about $1.50 per negative I can make 8x10 collodion glass negatives. That’s an even more attractive alternative.

Many of us will moan and groan, but still pay up. But many (generally not on this forum) will decide that their fling with film is no longer worth the price of entry.

No worries. Kentucky moonshiners will come to the rescue and add some silver to their hooch, then use the barn broom at night to do the coating. There will be lots of affordable film and paper at Capone Camera in Chicago.

That's my worry as well in terms of this apparent revival in film and related film products. I'd expect an increase on an annual basis and there may be good reasons why in certain products it has to be relatively high but I fear that if it seems to be an increasingly disproportionate drain on newcomers money that leaves consumers scratching their heads as to why it has to be X percent when a lower percentage appears more reasonable then apart from the "hardcore" of film users demand will fall off

If it's 6% on a roll of HP5 I can probably offset that by buying a cheaper brand of butter at the supermarket or using my car for 2 miles less.

Looking at several retailers today it appears the price increase has already happened. Too late to stock up.

I ordered fp4 a couple of weeks ago and noticed the price increased .50 to 5.99 a roll...the 4x5 was the same price as two months ago...
