Ilford FP4 plus

I just LOVE this film!

Never lets me down. Don't know why I don't shoot more of it.




I just hung two rolls of 35mm FP4+ up to dry. Looking at a few frames through a loupe...wow! just beautiful!

Just thought I'd share the joy.

Yup, good stuff. I use Rodinal and Pyrocat HD, but I'm sure there are many more favorites for this film.

My favorite 35mm film from the early 1970s and later was FP-4, souped in HC110, rarely Rodinal, mostly D23. No real experience with "plus" at this juncture. I started with FP-4 when Freestyle was selling it's Essex brand in bulk rolls.

Good stuff, sure. It's got nothing on Plus-X though, which can be drop dead gorgeous.

Good that some can apreciate Ilford film, i can no longer. Whether it is Delta 100 or FP4+ my Jobo Expert drums just does not like Ilford film. I continue to have issues on the back of the film facing the drum. It looks like sombody was walking on my film. I have used pretty much all other Large Format film on the marked and have not seen any issues at all. I am done with Ilford.

Odd. I have done probably 200+ sheets of FP4+ and another 50 of Delta 100 in the Jobo 3006 Expert Drum and the Jobo 2521 with 2509n reels...never had anything but excellent results. I use D-76 (1:1), d-23 and occasionally, HC-110 dil. D (1+39).

I expect that the OP's reaction to FP4 is like my reaction to Kodak Plus-X - 125 ISO does seem to be a sweet spot for traditional emulsions in B & W film.

I also had major problems with the non-emulsion side of Ilford films in the Jobo 3005 Expert Drum. In my case, going with a non-hardener fixer (Ilford Rapid Fixer) solved the problem.

I love this film, too, especially in HC-110.

Yup, IMHO, this is the best B&W emulsion and soup there is.

Vaughn, good to know that i am not the only one to have some problems with Ilford film. I have only used PF TF4 and Zonal Pro fixers. If it takes so specialized fixers as the Ilford rapid fixer they can have it. I am no longer going to take Mr. Galleys cheap access to promote what i consider a tier 3 product from Ilford/Harman.
Kodak Rules and then there's other products that's far beyond what Ilford makes today.

In 35mm, I always loved two films, both defunct: the APX-100, and the Tri-X (pushed). The others are (for me) just partial replacements.
In 120, the HP5+ (pulled) remains my last favorite still in life. The other was the Tri-X (pushed).

Since when is Tri-X no longer available? Last time I looked, last weekend, there was still plenty of it on the shelves at Adorama, and B&H. Freestyle is stocking it, and so are a lot of other places.

Ok so everyone loves FP4. But not one post says why other than it is gorgeous or great or whatever. I used it for a long time in a commercial studio and always thought it was boring. Kind of muggy. the whites didn't sing and the mid tones were muggy. I was forced to use it by the owner of the business and I processed it in HC110 or FG7 or Rodinal and never found anything outstanding about it. For my personal work in those days I would always use AGFA 25 and Rodinal and then later TMX and Beutlers. To this day I have and aversion to FP4.

I find FP4+ to be quite versatile. I like it. I can shoot fast or slow with it, and still get nice low grain photographs.
