Can anyone tell me if PANF+, FP4 ot HP5 is available in either 400 or 200 foot lengths? Maybe with BH perforations?

If not ilford what about Arista / Fomapan?

Thanks

I've heard both good and bad things about the ORWO, but I really, really like the look of Ilford stock, especially the PANF+. I'll call around and see if anybody has any short ends of ORWO I can try out.

Kodak still has 5222, but its $250 per 400' and over $600 per 1000'. No more Tri-X in 35mm

Ilford dropped Motion picture stock when they reorganized a few years back. if you want 400 ft 35mm B&W movie rolls you likely are limited to ORWO UN54 (100) and N74 (400) or Kodak 5222 (250) or someone's out of date stock.

The issues I've been told about ORWO was the emulsion scraping off at the film gate and issues with the thickness and width varying. I heard that for a few people. Then again this was in 2005-2006 so those issues could have been fixed by now.

I've just been shooting Vision2 and Vision3 stocks and converting to B/W during editing. But I want to start shooting B/W film for a few projects.

This "new" ORWO films I tried only with still cameras. Years ago I used ORWO motion picture films in a Arri 2C with out any issues, but that amazing camera will even deal with unperforated 35mm film!
It's remarkable achievement what did Kodak with their technology in the last 30 or 40 years, both in chemical and mechanical engineering, especially with their Vision series. When that technology is gone, nobody will be ever able to replicate it. Very, very sad.
Even when ORWO was second largest photo material manufacturer in the world, back in the day, there were at least 30 years behind Kodak in colour technology.
Maybe you will need to do some minor adjustments for ORWO film in the movie camera film movement block?
I was on the project where we used expired Fuji movie film stock and camera technician had to adjust claws and registration pins on Arri BL2 to avoid jamming of the camera

tried running 100' of FP4 in my camera and it ate that s--t for breakfast. Pulldown claws and pins chopped it up like a paper shredder. Luckily I caught it and only lost 25 feet of film. I guess I need BH prefs. Damn.

Gorbas, I almost always shoot 200T and 500T and toss a 85 in the mattebox when needed. If I need the extra speed I just shoot unfiltered and correct it later.

Just ordered a 1000' can of ORWO, pretty cheap actually.

ORWO was not the second largest. In those days that was Agfa-Gevaert.

In coinage the bad drives out the good Gresham's law. Works with other things as well.

The Orwo rep here says their film is ok in Arris.

Yes, their is a "slight" difference at movie speeds between Ks 1870 and BH 1866. I once sat down and did the calulations, and 35mm movie cameras run the film up (and down) between 0 and 200MPH, twenty four times a second. if the perfs are not exacptly whee the camera expects to find them, (and KS perfs being slightly oversize tend to be a bit "sloppy" to the camera. you will lily have problems.

the Russian 35mm Movie cameras did expect KS perfs, although I am not sure if they were 1870 or 1866. they might have better luck with still camera film.

Eastman 5222 is considerably cheaper if you can find short-ends. If available Film Emporium is selling them for $0.18 per foot in 200 to 250 ft rolls. That's less than $50 a roll on a core. This is fresh stock left in cine cameras after a shoot. The lengths are too short for another scene and so sold off cheaply. First contact http://www.filmemporium.com/store Since their stock can vary rapidly from day to day call them rather than use the web site. There are several other companies that also sell short-ends. Google the web.
