Ilford Fiber MG

In the Generation-5 post, one of our members mentioned the two types of Ilford fiber. I was not aware they had different papers, unless it was Warmtone or something like that.

So what do you Guys/Gals think.
Do you have a preference, or do you see quite a difference in the two Ilford Fiber Papers ..... MGFB Classic Vs MGFB IV

There are several Ilford FB papers--all different, but there is no V or IV.

Yeah, the use of "IV" combined with Ilford's FB lineup is confusing to me. Is it possible the other thread was talking about the newer MGFB Classic vs the previous version of MGFB? If so, I find the newer Classic version to be much richer with greater dMax and better grade spacing; probably somewhat akin to the new MGRC Gen 5 vs the prior MGRC IV.

Looks like the current generation of MGFB was introduced 6 years ago.

Yup. At which time its predecessor, the IV version, was discontinued.

Some people lament the passing of (and hoard) products no longer in production.

Current Ilford MG fiber-base offerings are: Classic, Warmtone, Cooltone, and Art 300. The "IV" was the predecessor to the current Classic. There is still some "IV" out there for sale as old stock or "used."

IMHO the Classic FB paper is head and shoulders above the old MGIV fiber paper in every possible way, especially for toning. The Warmtone FB remains unchanged and I have no experience with the cooltone.

"Multigrade Art 300
The world’s only black & white, variable contrast, silver gelatin coated, 100% Cotton Rag darkroom paper.
Slightly warm image tone with a neutral to cool acid free base
Especially suited to toning and hand colouring

OK..... then member i was "Quoting" was either confused about the timeline of Current/Discontinued products, or i misunderstood HIS timeline when he discussed the two different papers.

I just re-read my post that you are referencing. Yes, I could have been a bit more lucid in what I wrote. IV was discontinued when classic came out.

Our lone local camera shop has pretty much given up on selling paper. He's got a couple of ancient boxes of Ilford. Stuff just doesn't sell, people still buy online. I remember when he had a entire wall dedicated to all kinds of paper.
I stopped by the shop a couple days ago. I showed him an empty envelope of Kodak Medalist I had bought from him in 1983 . We are so lucky to have Foma and Ilford.

Only thing I ever stockpiled was 120 Verichrome Pan and now I'm down to my last two rolls :-( There will never be another film like it, especially when developed in PMK.

Classic (neutral tone) and Cooltone are similar except in one obvious aspect: image color. So both are a significant improvement over MGIV, but in two different directions, tone-wise. MGWT is a more expensive product with a stunning DMax, warmer still than Classic. I use em all.
