Ilford doubles in Japan!

I only bought and used d3200 in 35mm and 120. Now I will be just using more trix@1600 and try to get by work less delta.

And for what I do need, I will be importing it the way I used to do in Australia. No way I will pay double the price of what it would cost me to get it from overseas including postage.

And I bet it's mostly greed by the distributors, just like in Australia.

After the last price increases by kodak, I have mostly switched to Fuji from portras. Although, I still do love Ektar.

I always vote with my feet.

Perhaps the key question which we ought to direct to Simon Galley is: By how much has Ilford's wholesale prices to Japanese retailers increased in the last few weeks?

I doubt if Mr. Galley would be willing to divulge such commercially sensitive information on an internet forum.

You may be right but without at least an indication of whether there has been an Ilford increase and in what range it might have been, this thread will consist of speculation that could go on until the next price rise

In the past I recall Ilford announcing price rises here on APUG.

Likely last price rise was Jan 2013?
 
Eg this years UL special is same as last years...

So EricDan jolt is resellers risk or sales of Ilford larger than Kodaks ie cashing in chips.
 
I'm done with Ilford for the time being. Don't see a reason to buy their film at that price. Kodak Tri-X is great and costs 30% less.

Suggest you need to buy a few months supply ahead.

Last summer it disappeared?

Mono chrome keeps ok in UK's ambient but you may want to ziplock and silica gel in Ja summer.
The 35mm 135 tubs are just not safe in a fridge.

We have not DOUBLED prices in Japan ?.

We have not had a worldwide price increase since February 2013 and that was only on some film items :

We do have to adjust prices in individual countries from time to time, Japan is certainly no exception, we had an adjustment on two film
products ONLY in February 2014 no increase on any paper product or chemistry or anything else.

The very big problem in Japan is that when the Yen is 'effectively' devalued it makes exports from Japan cheaper, it also makes imports a lot more expensive :

Yen v £ : 22 September 2011 117.23
11 December 2014 189.30 A devaluation of 38.07 % against the £ today its at 177.46

And according to my own checking Yodabashi today HP5+ 135-36 1,010 Y Tri-X 135.36 988 ( Based on a 5 pack price ) so I make that 2.17% cheaper than HP5+ and you have to purchase 5 films ???

Our whole ethos is to have fair worldwide pricing : Once currency exchange, distributor and re-seller margins, local sales taxes, import duties, and shipping costs are added its IMPOSSIBLE to have the same price all over the world, but believe me we do our best.

So in other words your FX forward has expired and you had to enter a new one at a worse rate?
Tri-X sells only in 3-packs for 2555 yen.

Correction to the above. Seems like Kodak TriX has gone up again and is on par with HP5 now.
I guess we should not complain and just pay up but it hurts when you paid 840 for a roll of D3200 last month and now we have to pay 1530.

Firstly, its only right that you should challenge and complain if you feel unfairly treated, secondly its nothing whatsoever to do with any FX forward in Yen but I can see why you think it may be.

Finally, The Japanese market was the cheapest film market in the world for many, many years, no sales taxes, FUJI was a domestic producer, KODAK matched or even bettered FUJI pricing and ILFORD was ALWAYS higher in cost than both.

I think the price issue in Japan has to do with the currently weak Yen. It happens to all peoples in all currencies in all countries. I guess it's 'your turn in the barrel' this time. Unfortunately that's the way the world economy works.
 
for a while Kodak was probably almost doing retaliatory pricing in Japan on film as fuji was rather aggressive in the US market. More than once I ordered some gray market Kodak colour film from freestyle and received "Proof of Purchase- Japan" packed film.
 
Yet, people who blame the weak yen, how can you explain that it cost half as much to order from overseas? That's including shipping. And if it's cheaper to a person like me, I'm sure it's cheaper for big companies. I just call BS on it.

It costs more to buy many Ilford products in the UK than it does from B&H in New York.

Most likely because the US distributor has been able to negotiate far lower prices than any other distributor.

It may be, as well, that the tariffs for importing small personal orders of goods into Japan from the USA are lower than the tariffs for importing large commercial orders of goods into Japan from the UK.

There may be other costs such as complying with regulations and packing rules that a commercial importer would have to deal with while an individual would not. For example does the commercially sold ILFORD film in Japan have to be labelled in Japanese? here in Canada it has to be labelled in English and french and the chemicals have to have a WHMIS label. All ILFORD product I have seen sold in North America seems to comply ....
 
The yen devalued about 20% when the franc stopped being pegged to the euro. It devalued 20% not 100%!
How can that double prices?
Even if you have to adjust prices in different counties eventually. Doing so in this manner can hardly the best choice. 'Gradual' increase vs overnight price
Doubling.

The wholesale chain needs to be able to eat?

Kodak disappeared in your shops for an interval last summer.

Buy a larger fridge.

The people in China who buy ivory need to pay more.
 
Ilford is shooting themselves in the foot.
What if your rent doubled overnight and the landlord then told you "you were overdue and increase a long time ago anyway" ?
Probably move out right?

Eric, you're so angry. If you believe Ilford is being so horrible then just buy another brand... vote with your pocketbook. After all that's the only thing businesses care about.
 
Xmas, good that you're paying attention. You should've also seen that I found out why. The distributor messed up on some import paperwork and the container wasn't released for a month or longer.

I just import in bulk with Nuff. It's just sad because a lot of Japanese people won't be able to do that and simply stop buying the product.
