ILFORD Developers - open question to Simon Galley

What about bringing back two great Ilfrord developers.

1: Hyfin - Very high acutance, fine grain, speed enhancing.

2: Certinal - great film and print developer. Ilfords version of a Rodinal type developer.

Hyfin? A relative of Hypam? Never heard of it.

"Certinal" probably makes no commercial sense for them, because Rodinal is available.

Agfa Rodinal is being made under the Agfa brand name by A&O, which purchased the Agfa chemical and mini-lab business.

There are other makers of a Rodinal type developer based on Rodinal's published formula.

Dear Ian,

These are very old.....I will see what I can find out about them in the ILFORD Photo library, we already have what we would call 'a full range' of developers
so I would have to say very, very unlikely but I will have a look.

If a very old developer is reintroduced there is no guarantee it will work well with current films. It would require extensive testing to be able to publish developing times, etc. Hence, all the modern Pyro based developer formulas are vastly different from the Pyro formulas used in the classic era.

I'm happily using ABC pyro with modern films after trying some of the alternatives. It still works, if you like the look.

I seem to remember reading that Hyfin was pretty similar to Beutler's or FX-1.

If you can keep introducing new products, it might be supercalleyfragilistic etc! Don't however re-introduce Dick van Dyke however.

Yeay! 2007 will start wonderfully! After that, I only want world peace and end of hunger to be satisfied.

Dan: One thing I know about this new Ilfosol is that will rid of the short shelf life that has plagued the current formula and is the major failing of it. Otherwise, its perfect (atleast for me).

This is what Hyfin looks like now, but it doesn't work. Definately shouldn't be this colour

As Simon Galley could tell us this was made in 1967. Similar aged Microphen fairs even worse Part A has gone totally brown and there's migration through the packaging. I'm 39 years to late to ask for replacements !

How about bringing back Ilford's ID 11 Plus? Back when I did a lot of beta testing for Jobo, we found it about the best developer with Jobo processors in that it reduced the amount of Bromide drag with the "old" formula films such as Plus X, Tri X and FP4 Plus. We also considered it the best developer for both the newer tab films such as Tmax and Delta.

Can you explain what are the other improvements of this ID 11 Plus, besides the reduced bromide drag?

From my recollection Hyfin was brown when fresh.

Hi Harry,
The Plus ingredient was called B4Z as I recall. It was also used in the Cibachrome developer and was made by Geigy. A anti cheleating agent
prevents the free silver from the developing process redepositing itself
back on the image. This not only affects bromide drag, but affects sharpness of the image, for the same reason.

Paul Rowe from Jobo and I both complained to Ilford at the time, to no avail. This occurred at the same time Ilford took over production of Ciba and changed the name to Ilfochrome.

David from my recollection the press release for ID-11 Plus, in the British Journal of Photograpy, indicated that it was reformulated and contained Phenidone rather than Metol, it was only made for the American market.

There was a major issue with large processing labs running processors with D76 or regular ID-11 and replenishment as the new developer was totally incompatible.

Kodak's XTOL does have Phenidone as well as vitamin C, and the Phenidone
never created a problem there because it originally was designed by Kodak specifically for machine processing. They wanted a machine compatable "universal" type of product for their own use to begin with.

Hi again,
Found my box. It contains:

hydroquinone
methyl
p-aminophenol sulfate
and sodium sulfite

I have no idea whether it was made for the US market only,although
the box does indicate that it was distributed by Ilford, Inc. Paramus, New Jersey which of course is in the US.

I am now out of XTOL so I can't check it's packaging for ingredients.
