Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone has used or is using the Ilford UK Develop and Hi Resolution Scanning service in B&W or Colour.

What are the results ?

Is it worth the costs, or should one get one's own scanner (Epson V700 f.i.)?

Thanks for any input

Didn't you have a thread on this in Jan 2010 when you had used the Ilford service, got what you thought were light prints but eventually got a satisfactory answer from Simon Galley? Has something happened since? I am unsure what your reference to colour is. As far as I am aware Ilford will print only B&W on genuine silver gelatin Multigrade paper. I note that you were using Ilford film then.

I saw this service at first hand on the 2008 tour and it seemed excellent to me with superb prints.

Are you saying or asking if it is cheaper to scan the film and send the scans to Ilford rather than sending the actual film or asking whether it is better to scan the film yourself and then print yourself via non traditional means, cutting out the Ilford service altogether?

If it is scanning and non silver gelatin printing then I think this belongs in the hybrid section.

Some clarification on your post would be helpful

Amnesia's not easy, you could try searching the threads you've started there's only 3 :D

Like Pentaxuser I've seen the quality of the Ilford service first hand and it's superb. It's unlikely there's a commercial service in the UK to match it in quality.

DIY scanning & printing could certainly get you the same quality (from a dedicated 35mm scanner) but the cost in time & effort and watching ink dry would out weigh the benefits.

Hmm, see what you two mean.

It's particular their scanning service i'd be interested in (AND YES: iLFORD scan colour negs also, that;s why I mentioned it too).

I'm allready convinced by their printing quality.

Hope this clears things

Ah, so effectively you send them the negs which Ilford simply scans, including colour negs (and slides?) and then sends you back what? What will you then do with the scans in terms of prints or is this not part of the plan. Have I got this right?

As an analogue site there may be nobody here who would want to take advantage of just a scanning service. I must admit I had no idea Ilford would do this. Reading its info on the neg processing and printing I admit I missed its scanning service?

As you will have gathered I am curious but still a little confused, I think

Well, send them the film for developing AND scanning. So I'd be able to adjust the scans myself for printing.

Seems like a pretty clear question to me. How does Ilford's scanning compare to home scanning?

Of course, just because it is simple does not mean that it belongs here instead of on Hybrid Photo dot org. To post this on A.P.U.G., let alone in this particular forum, you cannot really understand what A.P.U.G. is all about. Hybrid Photo needs participation, and you will get better answers with no grief there anyhow.

Thanks for the reply. You originally mentioned colour film and while Ilford make no mention of developing colour neg film, it does do XP2+ so presumably could process colour neg but not of course print except as B&W prints. Are you assuming that Ilford will do colour neg processing on the basis of doing XP2+ or have you checked with them and got it confirmed?

I am simply looking to extend my knowledge of what Ilford will do.
