So they open bulk film in the light.........At what point does that make sense,I would assume anybody purchasing bulk film would understand what they are buying.

Perhaps a sticker that says "To be opened only by an intelligent person who knows what they are doing."

A label that warns: "open carefully - contents of this box include light sensitive film in a taped, folded over but otherwise unsealed, light-tight bag" might be helpful to both those who are inexperienced, and those who expect a can.

Referring to the original post about warnings, what I have never understood is why someone would expect a can to be inside of a black plastic bag inside of a sealed box.

Not inside the bag, but just inside the box.
And not all boxes were sealed.

I think some people are surprised to find a bag, rather than a light-tight sealed can.

A tip of the hat to Ilford for eliminating a bit of metal or plastic that would eventually find its way to the landfill.

So far I used all bulk-cans for other things.
Over here (and in great parts of Europe) landfills for general garbage are prohibted. Aluminium- or PE-cans go the the recycling fraction of trash.
Also relate the mass of a can to the mass of cassettes and canisters substituted by it.

Sadly some recyclables still make it to the landfill. It's best to eliminate the problem at the source before it gets to the consumer. A cardboard box is bio degradable whereas a metal/plastic can is not.

Because Kodak/Fuji bulk loading films have a can inside a sealed box! And nobody has complained about similar incident. Given the fact that only Ilford users complained, it is obviously either the way Ilford bulk films are packaged was flawed, or the Ilford users were intelligently incompetent.
