Ilford Delta 400 with "New" red highlight label: What's new?

I have shot a couple of rolls of Ilford Delta 400 and have been pleased with the tonality and scanning results. So, I just purchased a 100' roll from B&H for a great price, shipped free and arrived in Seattle surprisingly fast.

There is a red highlight label on the box that says "NEW". I have searched apug and the Internet and have not been able to find any details of recent improvements to the product.

So, what's really new with my fresh new box of Delta 400?

It has been "new" since the 90s. I think they're just using the same design instead of using one without the "NEW".

Yes it is exactly like that. I am not at home so I cannot supply a lot number or an expiration date. So, it seems that Ilford has had that "NEW" designation on their label for 25+ years now. I guess the only thing that's really new is the lot number. Thanks for the clarification.

Sorry for any confusion caused, John. We are aware of this label. Unfortunately, it slipped through the last label design review some time ago and we have been using those labels ever since. Please be assured that the star will disappear as soon as we next get a new delivery of labels for the 100ft boxes - this may be a while though as we have to order in bulk quantities.

As the packaging is more than a decade out of date and causing questions in the minds of purchasers, how about producing a nice sticker with your website address on it to cover that corner of the box eg. "Product details at http://www.ilfordphoto.com/products/". Some other up-to-date, more visually-friendly, marketing material could be used, of course.

Maybe rather "open only n the dark", as buyers may expect a platic can iside, instead the spool is only loosely wrrapped in black foils as criticized here recently.

Very good idea! You should get a bonus from Harman of a free bulk box of Delta 400 and I should get a free box for suggesting that you get a free box. Splendid idea!

So they open bulk film in the light.........At what point does that make sense,I would assume anybody purchasing bulk film would understand what they are buying.

In the past bulk film always came in cans. When then there is a cardboard box one likely assumes (I would do so) that for better handling the can just got boxed. If then one is not careful when opening the box and the black wrapper was not tightened, the film likely will be fogged.
And just that happened to another member.

Yes, I think I remember having a roll of bulk come and not even have the black plastic bag taped. I'm sorry, this is not a good selling practice.

I get bulk film in all types of situations. Some come in cans, some are in a black plastic bag. In no case have I ever seen anyone recommend opening the box outside of a darkroom or changing bag.

Why must everyone be treated as an idiot because a few people haven't figured out how to take responsibility for their own rash actions? If you opened up a box of bulk film in daylight and exposed the entire roll to light, it won't blow up and kill you. It may cost a couple dollars for the lesson, but that just helps to reinforce the lesson.

I think a lot of people buying bulk film for the first time or ones that are used to buying bulk film that is packaged in a plastic or metal can inside of the box might be inclined to open it in the light

I would suggest that the black plastic bag in the box be sealed and have a white label stick on it showing "open in total darkness". Thanks!

You lot haven't bought any Harman bulk rolls recently, have you?

Bought within the last month, it will be opened in total darkness tomorrow and 4-5 rolls to be used at weekend.
How many more labels do you want?
I remind you this was discussed recently and David kept his word as you can see.
Also, you can see the expiry date: I never let my film go past expiry date as I buy now, use now.

Since the 4th roll of b&w film I ever used I only bought bulk film (Ilford that was in those days).
I tought bulk film loading myself, I did not even know there was such as a loader.

Yes, I did not buy Ilford bulk films for many years, but what has that to do with criticism based on experiences of others?
And whether the first encounter with a bulk film not coming in a can is today or was 10 years ago does not matter.

EDIT:
The Ilford branded bulk films indeed got a warning already, but not the Kentmere ones. So, I mixed-up brands.
In July Harman promised to add warnings.

The best one's are the no knowledge bulk loader and photographic paper sellers on Ebay who take the bulk loader apart and show you the film inside or take out the photographic paper to show you the number of sheets in the packet , I have come across both and I got one to send me the ruined film along with the bulk loader so that I could make up dummy 35m cassettes for when checking out 35m cameras and it as been very useful in that respect.

I have bought Ilford and other makes of bulk film over the years and I have never ever considered anything but treating it in total darkness no matter what.
