Hello:

I intend to contact Ilford in regards to a special order of motion picture film. I am serving as cinematographer for an upcoming, very interesting film where Kodak Double-X will not fulfill our needs, and I seem to recall at least one member of Ilford regularly visiting these boards. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thank you!

'Harman Tech Service' is the username of anyone from Ilford who currently posts here.

I recall both HP5+ & FP4+ had cinema variants, no idea if there were any others.

Then again, Coutard notoriously spliced together many 100ft cans of HPS for Godard's 'Breathless' - though they had the benefit of shooting on an Eclair Cameflex which didn't mind KS perf...

The most recent reference I can find to an Ilford motion picture film is in the March 2009 Product Availability Listing, which shows FP4 Plus available in 35mm x 200ft lengths, but as a non-stock item. In the next PAL I have, from May 2013, the motion picture film listing has disappeared, and it has not reappeared in later editions. But perhaps they still have the capacity to cut to special order.

I also recall Simon Galley making comments to the effect that the cinema variants were not just simply BH perf versions of regular film stock - don't think he specified more than that, but it makes me suspect that you'd be looking at a full scale custom order/make - though a feature film might easily pass the requisite MOQ for that.

I read that Foma can also provide a 35mm cinema variant of Fomapan 400 (probably of their other films too) with a minimum order of 5000m.

I used to use HP5 16mm single perf in my 16mm still cameras. So they used to supply it. I still have remnants of a 100ft rool ( a little goes a long way on a 16mm still camera).

Thanks for all the responses. I used the contact form on the Ilford site - we'll see what happens.

I'm going after Ilford, since those are the films I'm familiar with. I'd really be starting from scratch with Adox or Foma, although I have used CHS (much too grainy and probably too slow for motion picture film). Quality control with the film base is also much better with Ilford - CHS was flimsy and prone to damage.

Good luck - I hope one way or another you'll be able to find something that will work for your project!
