Ilford 1952

OK anyone out there brave enough to admit to having experince of this one? It was in the back of a Picture Post dated May 1952 I picked up today

The only thing I will admit to is being born in 1952, but not until a few months after this photo!

Tony, your post of the ad in Picture Post reminds me of many similar pieces of photo history that I've seen on my visits to Ilford in Mobberly. They have adverts for their first version of VC paper dating back to about 1948/5 including some early work on split grade printing by the late Jack Coote including a cardboard hand made T shaped filter with a 0 filter on one side and a 5 filter on the other. I've had some great times in the R&D department in Mobberly looking at the history of the company and on the same visit working with them on the development of Warmtone and Delta 3200.

I'm very sad about the current situation and have lost touch with many friends in Ilford as a result of the recent redundancies. I hope and pray that things will get no worse.

Les I know what you mean and how you feel. I spent many years in IT in the brewery trade and next door was Ind Coope who had a poster in their sample cellar thats actually on the back of that issue for Double Diamond.

Pictures like this always make me wonder what happend to the people in the picture and the people I was with when I first saw them.

I'm sure when you meet up with lost friends at Ilford you will have many best wishes to pass onto them from those of us here including myself!

So very very true and that's what I love about old pictures.

Who was/is she?
Is she still alive?
Why was she chosen?
Did she work in an Ilford plant or was she a model?
What did she go on to do?
Is she a grandmother even?

I was at Bass but shared the odd pint with the Allied Breweries / Ind Coope guys and then worked with them for a short while when Bass took over one of their breweries. Then of course everyone got sold off at least twice.

I'm glad I posted this ad now, it's amazing what gems it has provided both on Ilford and brewing

A good friend of mine is retiring and closing his camera store after 54 years. He gave me an old Ilford spiral binder that was found while cleaning up. The logo is old and the title states "THE SEA - by famous west coast photographers" "Ilford Inc, a ciba-geigy company"

I was surprised to find it contains real prints (not reproductions) on the various paper surface types of Ilfobrom paper (Velvet, Matt, Rayon, etc). More importantly, they are by Ansel Adams, Wynn Bullock, Brett Weston, Edward Weston and many others. Some I have never seen before. Nice stuff!

There is a section thanking the artists and the Eikon Gallery.

Must have been made in the 60's because it credits Cole Weston for the Edward Weston photograph. I just thought it was interesting and I wish everyone could see it.

John a wonderful calm has just come over me with the hairs standing up on the back of my neck. It must be very special to not only see but also to hold. I don't often use this phrase but thank you for sharing
