Il flagrante Chris Killip

Some good news, Il Flagrante by Chris Killip is to be re-published in a series called "books on books". Regarded as one of the best photographic books ever published , it will be great to get our hands on a copy at an affordable price.

Technically speaking the "books on books" are not new copies (as new editions, reprints, or facsimiles). All the original pages are reproduced, but sometimes at 1/4 size, that is two original spreads on a single page.

Do they rescan or make new separations from the original images ?

I doubt it, I have an original it's superb an well worth buying.

They scan a copy of the original book. Entire pages are reproduced (complete with yellowing), not just photographs.

That's very poor quality, and it's still in Copyright anyway.

Delighted to see you have a copy Ian, I have the one on the Isle of Man but would love a copy of Il Flagrante. Good copies are hard to find.

Its such an important work I will be happy to have it in any format . So many photographers and students have never seen the book. I have heard the quality is quite good but some images are small as there are 4 and 8 images on a single page. Chris Killip supported the project.

I believe Chris Killips original idea for the book was a newspaper or journal type format but this never came off at the time. I would love to see the original idea in print, Steidl would make a great job of it. It might happen some day. If you have seen Robert Franks "Come Again" you will know what I mean.

He is publishing a new book in the spring of 2009, he has been photographing in Ireland in recent years and the new book is called "Here Comes Everybody: Chris Killip's Irish Photographs "

I believe the Books on Books series is the work of Jeffrey Ladd. I also believe that he is the same printer seen in the documentary, War Photographer, that covers the career of James Nachtwey. He also has a great blog (5B4.blogspot.com or something similar) in which he reviews photo books regularly enough to threaten my bank account. Nonetheless, if I am correct about the above statements, I expect the series to be a great addition to the world of photo books. He seems to have great taste and a great eye. Of course we would all love to have the original, but that is not financially viable for most. I would also assume that any copyright issues have been addressed.

Bumping this old thread... I just purchased this "Book on Book" version of In Flagrante. I recently saw some Killip prints at the AIPAD show in NYC, and thought they were stunning. My only regret... I didn't know of this work earlier. The book on book format is not nearly as satisfying as the original book, I'm sure (or his prints!), but it's clearly an important book that is hard to find. I'm glad to have this version, and to have discovered such an important photographer.

It didn't cost much, and reprints the essays from the book, but the pictures are indeed quite small. At any rate... if you can't afford (or find!) In Flagrante, this will have to do. It's an extraordinary and important body of work.
