ID11 and D76 Developer Shortage in the UK ?

I was wondering, what is causing the shortage of ID11 and D76 developers in UK photography shops at the moment.

I have looked at most websites , and rang a couple that just use the telephone.

No one has any ID11 or D76 in stock.

What is causing the shortage?

Is it just one chemical unavailable?

Can anybody enlighten me please?

Changeover of manufacturer from Tetenal. The liquid chemistry is coming back online in what looks a lot like Fuji Hunt's style of packaging.

The powder chemistry should be back in stock shortly from what I have heard - and there's Adox D-76 available too now (functional equivalent with newer, safer (from a regulatory perspective) buffer in place of the borax).

Regarding the chemistry of Kodak (D76) - this is normal. The company that held the rights went out of business. Another company will replace her, but it is not yet clear when, it could be 2-3 months.
About Ilford's chemistry - it's a bit strange really. There seems to be normal availability in Europe.
You can consider mixing it yourself - the formula is relatively easy and with readily available chemicals...

I replied to your comment yesterday: you can buy ID-11 at Blue Moon Camera - they have it in stock. And Freestyle has inventory of D-76. Remember, these two developers are for all intents and purposes, identical.

Don't know. I mix mine own from bulk chemicals that are all in stock at my supplier.

Yes I did see that thanks. I’m interested in the 5L packages. I have some ID-11 left now. We’ll see if it lasts until March. If not I will purchase some D-76 or mix my own.

The new liquid products have been feeding through the supply chain for several months now.

I assume that in some markets many folks when they could not get D76, switched to ID11 knowing it is basicaly the same stuff, which then meant that sales spiked for ID11. AND with the other disruptions - perhaps it will take longer to reorderID11 from the folks who make it for Harman.

depending where you are, the ADOX d76 is a functional equivelent, The Legacy Pro "l76" (if you can find it as FS shows it as out of stock) is another possibility and is likly almost identical to what we will be able to buy as Kodak D76 in the new year. another sub as is the flic film classic MQ developer.

I'm having the same problem. No D76, ID11 at all every where I've tried.

I am considering scratch mixing, but don't really want to go down that route.

Lots of other developers out of stock too.

Here in the U.S. Kodak D-76 has been blasting back online over the past month with a new manufacturer, so I suspect that once the distributors across the pond get their accounts set up with the new manufacturer, it'll be back. It'll probably be a month or two at most unless the new manufacturer is just not great at shipping outside the U.S.

It looks like the manufacturer is using Cinestill to provide distribution services, so any retailer that currently sells Cinestill products may get it quicker.

Nik and trick sell their own D76, which is made for them by Bellini in Italy.

It is likely that a lot of Kodak D76 users have switched to ID-11, thus creating a temporary shortage. I was also looking for some last month and ended up trying the N&T product. So far, I can tell you that it works.

I have just spoken to my regular supplier and they have not had any for several months. The latest news they have is production will start again in the middle of February and in the shops in UK a little after that. Apparently there is a shortage (non) of one of the three chemicals that go to make up the powder

Supply and stocking policies of manufacturers vary. It's perfectly possible that one manufacturer still has stock of a component for which global supply is disrupted. Since the price of chemistry comes down dramatically with quantity purchased, it's common to have fairly large stocks of raw materials.

I once read a book about share buying and selling for amateurs.
It said to avoid raw chemical makers shares.

Apparently the chemicals are stockpiled by the end product makers when the raw chemicals are cheap.
As the raw production costs go up no one is buying as they have tons stockpiled already at cheap prices. And so production of the raw goes down. Eventually the raw chemical producer cuts his profit and reduces the price just to keep the business going. Then everyone stockpiles at the cheaper prices again.


It's seems like a no win situation for the raw chemical makers.

This might be the most naive question I've asked here....but is there any reason to believe that Harman outsource manufacture of their B&W photo chemicals to Tetenal?

Many of the ILFORD (Harman) branded photo chemical products were labelled 'Made in Germany' in the same style of containers as used by Tetenal.
