ID-11 or Microphen


I have seen a report several years ago now from someone who tested various developers for D3200 and he concluded that only Microphen gave him box speed. There will no doubt be a range of views on whether any developer can deliver box speed with D3200 but there does seem to consensus that it does give at least a half stop over its "true" speed of 1000-1200.

I should add that I have never used Microphen with D3200, nor any new type P3200. If box speed is needed by you then I'd give Microphen a go with D3200. It will be relatively grainy in 35mm, even Xtol is, but in 120 from my experience with Xtol, this will matter a good deal less.

Grain is of no concern, I will buy two or three rolls, purely for experimental purposes. Want to know how it all works before it goes out of stock in my country.

Lab where I usually develop black and white film has the process streamlined and adjusted for your average amateur photographer - it yields average results both from well shot good film and badly shot cheap film. Very balanced, average sharpness, little to no contrast even from films like Acros 100 and Tmax-100. I figured I could do a bit more at home if/when I get it right. My father used to do it all at home so I'm full of equipment.

One more question. It is stated in dev documents that:

"Always make up the developer stock solution to the volume stated on the pack, do not attempt to prepare smaller quantities by using fractional parts of each powder, however larger stock solution quantities can be prepared by using multiples of whole packs."

Is this something I should definitely take into consideration? Why can't I prepare half of the solution for example even if I have a very good scales?

The two powder packets that make ID-11 each contain more than one substance.

If I remember correctly part Part A contains two chemicals and B contains four different active chemicals, some at 10% some at 5% and so on. You're run the risk of not getting the correct quantities/proportions if you use half a bag. Even if you try shaking the bags or decanting into containers and stirring the powders.

However if you use two 1 litre packs to make up 2 litres, you will have the chemicals in the correct quantities.
 

I understand now, thank you. So I guess I'll have to track the shelf life of the solution.
