Iceland Anyone?

I´m currently in Iceland at the moment assisting Michael Smith and Paula Chamlee. Iceland is an absolutly beautiful country, and everywhere I turn there is fantastic images to be made! I looked at the images posted above and they do not do justice to Iceland´s beauty. Sorry to say, they are some very poor images of some amazing places.

We have only photographed around the bottom of Iceland and will be traveling North later this week. Michael and Paula´s workshop also starts in 2 more days.

This is a country where a photographer (black and white or color) could spend a lifetime photographing and never get bored. I plan to come back here within the next few years again.

I will be sharing my new images with everyone on my site and on APUG when I return in late August.

Eliot Porter´s Iceland images are very beautiful photographs. Very realistic color and beautiful form.

I hope you shot some color. Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing your work - I've always enjoyed your photographic vision.

Is it possible that they just aren't appealing to you? I don't think because they are images that you do not prefer that that makes them "very poor images." In my personal opinion, I don't see what makes Eliot Porter's images any better, but that's just my taste.

Actually I did take color on all 4 trips, but they became more tourist snaps than anything. Although they are not close to what you could do with the place, you can see a couple collections of my personal d*gi-snaps of 2 of my trips at the following links. Possibly, yes. However, after seeing the beauty of Iceland and viewing those images, I can understand more his intent for photographing those certain subjects. Alot of those places he photographed and absolutly stunning, and if one is viewing those images to ´see whats in Iceland´ and try to gain an appriation for whats here, they don´t express that part of Iceland very well.

Not to mention alot of the images are also poor compositions and rather uninteresting.

Ryan,

This is just your personal opinion, and we don't all have to share it. Not everyone is out to photograph the obvious, the spectacular: some find a quiet oddness, a characteristic, that others miss. In this case, my opinion is that you have missed it.

But that is just my opinion.

While neither of the two really appeal to my taste (I have seen some from Iceland that do - and were color) I think that it is OK. Sometimes I think we forget that 1 - what someone post is just their opinion and 2 - we are not going to all like the same work. The reminds me a great deal of how I see some react to the work of Robert Adams vs Ansel Adams. One is the master (ok, get over the debate about who does/does not like AA work - that is a seperate thread - ) the other is more pedestrian for lack of a better description. One is the great landscape, the other the urban setting - the more mundane (not meant as a negative here).

So yes Ryan and others did not enjoy the first link....no big deal, they don't have to like the work. On the other hand some do, the work just appeals to them.

Just early morning thoughts before work, while enjoying a strong cup of coffee...some of you might agree, others will not...that's ok with me too
 

You are totally correct! It is just my personal opinion about the work, and the same goes for ANYONES work in the world. One photographer may like it while another may not. Absolutly nothing wrong with that. My idea of a strong composition or 'good photograph' is different from others, and that is a good thing! It would be boring if everyone liked the same exact thing!

What I´m trying to say is that people interested in traveling to Iceland to photograph cannot really view a snapshot of a street sign and judge that as being what there is in Iceland. Same goes for Porter´s work, close up abstractions of moss on rocks which could have been taken almost ANYWHERE in the world. They are beautiful photographs, absolutly stunning, but one cannot get the sense of a whole location by viewing such images.

There are some locations in Iceland that are so unique and cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Those images do not truly represent those locations. Really, the individual must travel and truly experience the location for themself to see the real beauty that the land has to offer.

Hope you understand what I´m trying to say here. It´s not a critique of the images, but rather my reaction to seeing the images after seeing the actual location. Much like spending a lifetime viewing Adam´s Yosemite photographs, then the actual feeling you get when you arrive to the same location in person. It´s completly different.

Thanks for the link. I'll probably spend sometime going over this one. One gallery I found particulary interesting, was the "shooters" gallery. There is a bunch of images of other photographers, but only one was shooting LF - it is labeled "The slow approach!" - the rest are shooting digi.

Exactly. Iceland is a land of wonders to be interpreted in many, many ways. I choose the land because it is what my people do. It offers a unique palate in that it is not the familiar landscape we all see time and time again in all styles of photographs (yet). The land is but the tip of the iceberg, if you'll forgive the pun.

PS. I enjoyed all the links. Having been there I find some of the work amusing (o'connor) and it captures the odd "feel" and color of Iceland quite well.

Yes, however the water is alot higher at the moment and it covers most of the rocks. Only about 7 large round bolders were sticking out of the water. Also, the horizon line in the back in more dominate when I was there.

I created a few images at the location and will share them with you when I return.

I'm not sure if it's this. I have been to those rocks as well. And i remember a black sand line at the horizon, as we can see at the image below. and i think, if there is was a very low tide, wouldn't be the sand bar even more viewable? On the second image, there is no black line at all.... hmm
