I was out with my rb67 today...

Using it hand held at an event with an L-grip and flash. Another photographer came up to me at some point and started chatting.

Him: Are you a professional?
Me: No. Just an amateur shooting for himself.
Some small talk goes by.
Him: So how many is it? 15? 18?
Me: No 20. (assuming he was asking how many exposures)
Him: Eyes get bigger
Me: Wait. Were you asking about exposures, or cost?
Him: Cost.
Me: Oh! Only about $300.
Him: More large eyes
A moment of silence goes by.
Him: Is that a film camera?

I'm taking a photography class at a local art school. Out of 15 or so students, there are only few that are vaguely familiar with film and film cameras. I brought in my Mamiya M645 and very similar conversation actually took place. They all looked at the back of Mamiya and sort of had puzzled looks - where's the LCD?

Funny. On numerous occasion I've had had people look at the viewfinder of my medium format cameras and ask me if that was the LCD. My most favorite quote from one of those people was "Wow! It looks just like real life!"

I tell people yes it is a film camera, and it can be a digital and a Polaroid. That blows them away. Then I say to them, you know how you have to turn your camera on its side to take a vertical picture? When they say yes I show them how the back just flips around. They always go...woooooow! Ric.

One more thing.

Also, tell them that you have been using it for a couple of years and you haven't had to change the batteries yet. Don't be surprised if they tell you that their digital goes through batteries like crazy. Ric.

A few weeks ago I was photographing some trees and what not by a wooded river hiking path. A man came by with his family and was staring at me and my RB67 on my tripod as they walked. They kept going with no questions or comments. Some time later, they were heading back from their hike and I was in the same area. The man couldn't help himself; his family went on and he lagged behind a bit, finally saying, "That's gonna be a really nice picture." I smiled and replied, "Yeah, it's really nice here." "The greens are so vibrant," he said. "Yeah, they almost glow in the setting dark."

I didn't have the heart to tell him I was shooting black and white.

I've never had anyone ask if what I'm shooting is film or digital. I've had people ask what the hell I'm taking a picture of, but never a question of what medium.

I have an old Kodak box camera that I converted to digital. I stuck a Post-It note on the back with 1's and 0's written all over it.

Similar story, I was shooting sand ripples on a beach some weeks ago, a lot of people were passing by out on their sunday stroll. An elderly couple came by quite close, I was bent down real low over the RB on the tripod which had its legs all split. Just before I was about to trip the shutter the lady in the couple said out loud 'You forgot the darkslide'. So I had.

Auckland airport 3 days ago - I ticked the box saying I was bringing in wooden items...

What wooden items ?
A camera...
A what ?
A camera, a wooden camera...
A wooden camera ?
Yes, a wooden camera - I bought it here, its just coming back into the country again
How much is it worth ?
I bought it for $170 ($100 something US)
A wooden camera - 'BIZARRE'

Its the way he said bizarre that got to me, like he really thought I was odd - like I was substandard, 'arty' not a real man or something. Can imagine he was going to tell his co-workers about me on his tea break... He looked about 40 something

Perhaps worse is the 30ish X-Ray lady at Melbourne - I asked if my sheet film could be hand inspected (as EVERY OTHER AIRPORT I'VE BEEN THROUGH ALLOWS) - she said sure and proceeded to start opening the boxes -

'woah woah woah - please STOP!'
What?
Its film ?!
Silence...
Its photosensitive - If you open it, you may as well throw it away...
Well, I have to open it - rolls her eyes, then starts picking at the tape again

Ok, ok please stop that - then I grab it off her
Supervisor arrives ... 'no one here wold ruin your film'
AHEM - she tried to twice

anyway, long story short - no dice - I sent it through the x-ray machine and yes it'll be fine...

I just like to try out of interest

I was using my RB67 at a ruined abbey. A guy was watching me, eventually he came over and I was expecting the usual 'you still using film you should have moved over to..whatever' and he said that seeing me out with medium format has really inspired him and next time he was going to come back with his Pentax 67. I feel so proud......
