Hello, new guy here, just signed up for photrio a few days ago so this is my first post but I’ve been in to photography since the late 70s on and off since then.

Got a 501 C/M and a few lenses a couple of years ago because I’m retired now and had to scratch that one last itch I had.

I haven’t heard it mentioned yet in this thread, but as the 500 series is a “system” with a lot of various accessories, I found “The Hasselblad Compendium” by Richard Nordin, to be invaluable to describe what components are available, what they do and what are compatible with which cameras. I got the last edition, published in 2012. Maybe this isn’t needed for everyone, but I found it very helpful in understanding the system as a whole.
 
I truly love the fact that you can look up an accessory by number. I just got a 42459 viewfinder magnifier that will help these aging eyes find that perfect focus. It is such a cool system!

Yes these really are great. Especially when you have the camera on a tripod.
 
I know I've posted this before, but B&H has their Sourcebook from 1998 on their archives site available for access... it's a great resource for Hasselblad (and other brands) that were available at that time...


When you go in there, marvel at the prices for the Hasselblad gear, especially the lenses... and remember, those are 1998 dollars... There's a reason I never bought one of these back then.

Me too, until a very fortunate day came that I had a chunk of money that wasn’t needed for essentials. Bought a new 501c/m and a couple of accessories about a month before the V-system was canceled. Best decision this stingy, frugal, cheapskate Yankee ever made. One of the best. Only regret is that life lately dies not include much opportunity to use it.

Those Hassy prices are eye-watering. The Bronicas weren’t exactly being given away either. Great fun seeing this old catalog, thanks.
 

It is interesting that the basic 80/501CM/back combo hasn't lost all the much money when inflation adjusted compared to today's used market.

The lenses are much worse in losing the value though.

Most of my gear was stolen in Spain in the 1990s. I had insurance that replaced the lot of it at then new prices. I tried to explain to the insurance people that I had bought a lot of it used and would do so again, and I wasn't looking to rip them off for new pricing. I just wanted to replace like used for like used. But they said "Nope, you paid for replacement insurance and that means you get full new price as the settlement." I still bought a lot of stuff used and gray market (from a place in Grand Cayman) and kept the extra dough for later use. I did not replace everything all at once and as prices came down, I was able to get the lenses for even less.

Now the biggest cost is keeping the bodies and lenses maintained.
 
I paid less for three macro tubes than they were charging for 1 back then (though I'm not considering exchange rates, which were far different back then I think)!
 

I have one too. IMHO, they are worth it, as not only are they very useful, but the ring/collar around the outside key slot in each end of the tool helps prevent the tool from slipping off the key while re-cocking the lens or body.

I used a coin, once or twice on a lens, but after having a slip with a lens I ordered the tool and have been happy with it. That, plus, the one time that I had to recycle/re-cock my 501CM's body way way down in there I was very happy to have the right tool rather than using a screwdriver.

Yes, a little over $20.00 and it come with a leather case too. If the leather case had a belt loop I'd buy two or three and put them on my belt when I went out shooting. People would look at you and think, "now that guy is cool", he has three Hasselblad cocking tools. I do think the leather case would help those of us that misplace things spot the tool faster. For cocking the lens itself I always have a coin in my pocket and I don't need a leather case for that.
 

Which is what KEH would tell him so the price of a telephone call.
