I think that my FM2 is back focusing. How to fix?

I had a similar issue with my FE2. After changing the focusing screen didn't solve the problem, I adjusted the spring tension of the pressure plate. Now it appears to be spot-on.
That's good, and definitely good info for the OP.

I swapped out the whole back on mine with one from a known good FE2, and the issue persisted.

I think my camera was cursed.
 
If the pressure plate were not contacting the rails, the film would be behind the intended focal plane. The negatives would have shown the focus to be in-front of the subject.

Actually, it is. I goofed by calling it back focusing.
 
There is a tiny spring that can break in the mirror return/rebound mechanism on the FM/FE series. If broken, mirror does not return to its proper position.
