I stuffed up Pan F+ Exposure Index - Suggestions Please

I tested and played around with SLIMT for a few weeks before I used it on meaningful images. I also used his bleach and redevelopment technique for extreme contractions (even harder to control). I would not recommend either of these techniques unless you know how to use them well with your film (and from all the testing I did with his bleach/redevelopment, it works beautifully with TMY, and so so with my main film at the time, HP5).
I think your best best is to just push the film.

I have never thought of using a graphite pencil to lubricate a reel before. I do the same thing on keys that are a bit sticky. That's a good tip and I'll remember it. Thanks. I did go back and blast the reel with a hairdryer for a minute and then the film went straight on with no problems. I do notice when loading 135 with some films the resistance becomes quite a lot when trying to get the last 6 inches or so on and I know it's not due to moisture. I think your tip with the pencil might be the perfect remedy for that.

I suspect that a thorough clean of the reels on a frequent basis might avoid the "pencil trick" but I find the graphite works for long periods and get around the problem of thorough cleaning on a frequent basis.

The resistance at then end of the roll is mostly friction and graphite might just reduce it enough.

Yes, most likely just friction and I expect the graphite will do the trick. As I said, some films are worse than others. Some just slide on very easily. The reels are pretty clean although many years ago I did have a problem with sticky reels that may have been caused by the wetting agent. I read that dipping your film into the wetting agent while still on the reel (what I used to do) would cause the reels to become sticky from the wetting agent residue. I didn't know if it was true or not but I gave my reels a thorough clean and stopped dunking them into the wetting agent and the stickiness did disappear.

On a side note, now that you have developed your underexposed Pan F, I was somewhat surprised as was the video presenter in question, that FX55 produced a genuine 200 and maybe slightly more out of FP4+. As you seem to have the facilities and skill to home-make Mytol, you might want to take a look at the video by someone called John Finch He has 3 or 4 parts to it, including its make-up and I found all of them worth watching

Here's the one where he found FP4+ speed in FX55


I can't say that had he used Mytol he might not have achieved the same speed as with FX55 nor can I say that this speed increase would apply to Pan F but it seems a reasonable bet

Pentaxuser, thanks for alerting me to this video. I am familiar with John Finch's Youtube channel and his videos are worth watching. I can't remember if I've seen the FX 55 videos or not but I will definitely have look. Thanks.

Considering my Pan F should have been rated at EI 25 due to the full sun conditions, the Mytol did pretty well at developing such an underexposed negative. The fact that the main subjects, wife and dog, were both in black really didn't help.

Can't speak for wife but we look after the in-laws completely black and shiny coated black Labrador and taking its picture with any detail in its coat is murder

Not sure I have ever really managed this yet

Pentaxuser: I've been trying to get my wife to wear something other than black for about 20 years. No real luck yet but on the days she does mix it up she wears black pants with a white top. Can you believe it?! The other thing she likes to do is to put her hands against her face when I take her photo. The problem here is that her hands are a good stop lighter than her face and trying to burn in fingers is a real pain in the backside.

I'm watching John Finch's videos about FX 55. I hadn't seen them so thanks for telling me about them.
