I once saw an amazing etched photo print...

Many many years ago I attended photographic awards in London which had some amazing large scale prints on display. This must have been in 1998 as I remember it's where I purchased my first ever digital camera the Fujifilm FinePix MX-700! And yes I still have it.

There was one black and white landscape print in particular which really grabbed my attention. It appeared as though areas of the photograph had been etched to different levels of depth. From memory I think the lightest areas were etched most. It gave the photo a stunning depth and aesthetic.

Would anyone know what kind of process this might have been or how it can be done today?

Mordançage?

Most likely a carbon print.

These could be carbon transfer prints or photopolymer etching. And sometimes bromoil gives very good results.

That would be carbon transfer (or possibly carbro). With photogravure/photopolymer you would have the shadow areas as the valleys and the light areas as the peaks.
