That wouldn't mess up my developer for the next rolls, would it? From the dyes that come off the film..I'm using kodak portra if it makes any difference.

Thanks

I "forgot" for most every roll I've done.

I do 4 30 sec. pre-soaks with the jobo. Works perfectly.

In all the C61 I have used in the last 20+ years I have never pre-soaked a film. My feeling is unless you are SURE you have drained out all the pre-soak water then the film inside will get slightly dilute developer. Not very dilute I will admit but the risk is there. Just think about it. When did you last hear of a mini-lab doing a pre-soak?

The reasons I don't are, that the developer is an expendable and that the directions provided for my chemicals don't specify presoak.

I get more accurate colors when I pre-warm the tank dry, rather than pre-soaking. I don't think the official C41 developing regime calls for a presoak.

I have never pre-soaked, for C41 or e6, best I do it? I read somewhere one should not presoak c41 and especially to e6, am I wrong?

This comes up every now and again, i have yet to have seen any manufacturer instructions for any C-41 (or e-6 for that matter) that call for pre soaking, i know of no commercial machine that presoaks either.
Why do people do this?

Some years ago, someone taught me how to make perfect rice - they said: "read and follow the instructions".

I guess thats good advice to anything in life that comes with a manual.

My Jobo manual tells me to pre-soak. So, which manual do you listen to?

I also have never presoaked a film. What is the point?

I would have thought that ingress of developer into a water soaked emulsion would be more variable in displacement terms than that of developer ingress to a dry emulsion.

The closer I get to doing it per the instruction the better I like my developing.

The Tetenal Press Kit says to pre wash. The only time I didn't pre wash I got streaking on some of my film. Don't know if it was because I didn't prewash or what? - just saying is all. I will try the same tank with a prewash next time and see. I wondered it the tank took too long to fill- about 10-15 seconds.

The Jobo and Fuji instructions say to prewash when doing rotary development because it will get the reels up to temperature and give you more even development. You can preheat dry but it would take as long as the process as a whole.

You also don't risk getting Dead Link Removed if you presoak.

I thought the Kodak guy who posts on here regularly recommends it. That (and the Jobo instructions) is what prompted me to pre-soak.
