There is loss with any scanning or printing technique. With a good scanner it's very small, and probably below the level where it's visible. As you mention enlarging has losses as well, as does even contact printing.
With a drum scanner you have most control of the scanning process of any of the scanning methods. But other scanners can still do an adequate job, even if you can see the difference compared to a top of the drum scanner.
