I am converting to digital and one small thing bothers me. That is the instruction on downloading images from the camera to the computer to not use a hub. Desktop computers are rarely on a desktop. They are usually under the desk and crawling around to hook up a short USB cable when your 87 is a fat pain in the rear. Whats wrong with using a hub?

Nothing wrong with a quality hub. keep the cable length reasonable and make sure the hub is powered. You should be fine.

Better strategy: use a chip reader and forget cabling the camera to the computer. Much faster, and way more convenient.

A card reader is certainly recommended, but I run mine through a USB 3 hub. I only have two USB ports on my laptop. I've never had an issue with the card reader or many external hard drives. Well made USB hubs are certainly safe if used with relatively short quality cables.
