Anyone tried this? So far I've used HP5+ in 120 on a project I'm doing rated @ about 1000, using DD-X

Rodinal is my standard developer, as I usually shoot Pan-F, TMX, Rollei Retro. And since I'm clean out of DDX and thinking the grain from Rodinal would really work well with this idea I thought I'd ask.

Massive Dev Chart gives some times but I wanted to tap into the collective wisdom.

Good question. I am considering using Rodinal for a project shot on HP5, to hopefully make it better match the Delta 3200 I shot alongside it in its grittiness. I shot all my HP5 under by 1/3 stop across the board by rating the film at 500. I will also be watching this thread to hopefully see examples.

My normal speed with HP5+ in Rodinal is 200, so pushing one stop, for instance to increase contrast in diffuse light, I develop in Rodinal 1:25 for 8-1/2 minutes at 68 degrees (6 initial inversions, then two inversions at the top of every minute.) With gentle agitation grain is not at all intrusive with a 35mm negative enlarged to 6x9, but the prints look sharp. I have been favoring the look of the stronger solutions, at least I have been getting more "bite" this way. With Rodinal and HP5+ it is easy to get a lot of compensating effect, but that is not something I am aiming for right now.

If I went to 800 or 1000 speed I would try 12-13 minutes 1:25 at 68 degrees, and I would not be afraid of blocking highlights due to overdeveloping, as the dense HP5+ negs seem to print very well.

See below....Rodinal 1:50 HP5+ pushed to 800 for 120 film...it is my main formula in B&W MF...

...oh and I use 15 mins at 20C (30 sec inversion at start, followed by one inversion every minute..). Rgds, K

Those look great, Kal. I am betting that 68 degrees on my thermometer is a colder solution than on your thermometer.

you are also using 1:25, and I am using 1:50 ...so our thermometers may be closer than you tink...

I can only hope to get that kind of light, where I'm shooting! Great images Kal and thanks for the advice.

I was most interested in seeing the difference in grain between DD-X and my old standby of Rodinal. It's probably closer to 1600 than 800, what I'm doing.
